4 Pioneering Telecommunications Telecommunications have come a long way since Alexander Graham Bell first called his assistant for help (the first telemedicine consult). “Watson, come here, I think I have hurt myself!” In the mid-1880’s media pioneer A. H. Belo introduced the telephone to Texas and the place was Galveston Island. From that small beginning Galveston now leads the nation (and world) in telemedicine clinic visits.
