1 Food Preparation Techniques

2 Baste Brush or pour liquid over food as it cooks To add moisture

3 Beat To mix ingredients thoroughly with spoon or beater

4 Blend To mix 2 or more ingredients together

5 Bread To coat a food with fine crumbs E.g chicken

6 Brown To cook food in some hot fat to brown the surfaces

7 Brush To use a brush or spoon to spread liquid (egg or melted fat) over food

8 Chill To refrigerate until it is cold

9 Chop Cut food into small pieces with knife or food chopper

10 Combine To mix 2 or more ingredients together

11 Cream To beat with spoon or mixer until soft or creamy (butter)

12 Cube To cut food (bread or produce) into small squares

13 Cut in To mix shortening into flour with pastry blender or knife

14 Dice To cut into small cubes/pieces

15 Dot To put small pieces of food (butter) onto food prepped for cooking

16 Drain To pour off extra liquid

17 Flour To sprinkle flour and remove excess E.g for cooking fish

18 Fold in To combine 2 mixtures gently together until well mixed.

19 Garnish To decorate food or a dish with other colourful food

20 Grate To rub food on a grater

21 Grease To spread a thin layer of grease onto a pan

22 Grind To put through a food grinder

23 Knead To move dough back & forth with your hands
E.g. to make bread or tea biscuits

24 Mince To cut into tiny pieces as small as possible E.g. garlic

25 Mix To combine 2 or more ingredients by beating or stirring

26 Stir To mix ingredients gently with a spoon in a circular motion

27 Toast To brown food, such as bread

28 Toss To tumble ingredients very lightly with a spoon and fork
E.g. salad or pasta

29 Whip To beat rapidly with beater or mixer
Whip Cream or frosting for desserts
