3 RD PERSON NARRATIVE What is the difference between a 3 rd person omniscient narrator and a 3 rd person limited narrator? What does it mean for a narrator to be 3 rd person objective?

SUSPENSE Writers often “hook” readers by creating a sense of excitement, tension, dread, or fear about what will happen next. This is called suspense.

repeating words, phrases, or character’s actions Suspense Edgar Allan Poe uses the following techniques to develop suspense: describing a character’s anxiety or fear relating vivid descriptions of dramatic sights and sounds True!—nervous—very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am!

IRONY 3 types of Irony Verbal Situational Dramatic Verbal irony- when someone says something they do not mean the way it is said Sarcasm can be verbal irony: Irony: “Great! Someone stained my new dress!” Sarcasm: “You call this a work of art?”

SITUATIONAL IRONY Situational irony- when something other than the expected outcome occurs

DRAMATIC IRONY Dramatic irony- when the audience is aware something is about to happen, but characters do not yet know

READ THE EXCERPT BELOW: Gregory walked through the door and locked the lock. He was glad to be inside and away from the cold especially as the night was settling in. He pulled back the curtain, just at the corner, and peeked outside. When he pulled away, his face was ghastly pale. He ran into the kitchen and grabbed the first thing he could find: a baseball bat. Just then the doorbell rang. He approached the door cautiously, concentrating to see through the dimly lit night. Two figures were on his doorstep. One was shorter than the other and they both were wearing hoods to hide their faces. “Who’s there?” asked Gregory with his voice trembling. “TRICK OR TREAT!” The children screamed with delight. Gregory remembered then that it was Halloween night and he was supposed to give out candy. No wonder the street seemed so strange tonight!

IN YOUR GROUPS... Katniss- 1Harry Potter-2 Doodle-3General Zaroff-4 Gandalf-5The Wizard of Oz- 6 The Mad Hatter- 7 Each student will need a piece of paper and something to write with. Read the sentence frame and begin to write your own story for 2 minutes (NO STOPPING!) Then pass your story to the right and read your neighbor’s story. Spend the next 3 minutes adding to their story. (Keep going until you get your story back.) **Include suspense and a type of irony in your writing.**

EXIT TICKET Which concept was hardest for you to understand or remember? How will you remember it? (Suspense, verbal irony, situational irony, dramatic irony) What was the hardest part about writing your story? What was the most enjoyable?
