Do Now Briefly summarize story, “An Occurrence on Owl Creek Bridge” section by section What is foreshadowing? In the story where do we see foreshadowing What were we able to predict because of the foreshadowing How did the foreshadowing contribute to the effectiveness of the story? In other words why did the author use this technique?

Sensory details The aroma of chili filled the kitchen as my mother lifted the lid from the pot on the stove. The chili had been bubbling for hours as it simmered quietly. The heat of the stove filled the kitchen, making it a comfortable place on the bleak winter's day, far more inviting than the winds that howled outside, rattling the windows like banshees trying to break into our house.

Sensory Details When a person goes into a pizza restaurant, he or she will experience a variety of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings. When describing that experience, a writer tells about what he or she observed and felt. Don’t write this down!!!!

Sensory Details Descriptive writing includes precise details and effective word choice to create pictures in the mind of the reader. When you write it is important to identify sensory details that can be used to describe the topic selected. Sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings associated with the topic should be listed.

Sensory Details Sight Sound includes any description of what something looks like, where an object is placed, anything the character sees, any action the character observes. Includes a description of what you hear

Sensory Details Taste Smell includes any description of what something tastes like Includes a description of what you may smell

Sensory Details Touch includes any description of what something feels like

Let’s Practice The pale yellow of the light in the room calmed the squirming participants. Her fat thigh squeezed through the narrow crack in the door. The majestic mountain view inspired the dragging hikers.

Let’s Practice Tinkling bells alerted the assassins to danger. Murcio cooled in the symphony’s whispering melody. Roaring through the streets, 007 escaped.

Let’s Practice The Joads swallowed the bitter defeat and went home. He planted a sweet kiss on her salty, sweaty forehead. Palin read the letter that tasted to him like a bowl of sweet berries.

Let’s Practice “Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark,” sniffed Hamlet. Frederico smelled success as he flipped through the acrid bills. After being away, the spicy scent of Mom’s perfume enveloped him

Let’s Practice “He ran his hands through the cat’s silky mane. A velvety silence rolled in as Georgina slept on the fluffy pillow. A harsh thunder shook the desperate survivors to the core.

A chart like the one on the next slide can be very helpful in listing sensory details.

Sensory Detail Chart SenseDetail Sights tables and booths made of red metal with blue vinyl cushions Fireplace made of gray stones buffet filled with assorted pizzas, salads, and desserts Sounds customers talking kids making noise sounds from a big screen TV and game machines Smells garlic, tomato sauce, cheese, sausage, etc. Tastes flavors of pizza, sweet tastes of desserts, colas, etc Feelings hunger, cold, heat from the lamps on the buffet table

You Try!!! Select a familiar place that you can describe. Suggestions: your bedroom a barber shop your favorite burger place Prepare a chart of sensory details that can be used to describe the scene you choose. Your chart should look like the example in the previous slide. When you have completed your chart we have share with the rest of the class.

Theme Think for a few minutes of two ‘inspirational’ or ‘motivational’ phrases or sayings that you have read or heard before, or have made up For example, Believe in Yourself, Accept Others' Differences, Don't Be Afraid to Try New Things, Be Happy With What You Have, and Always be Kind to Others

These Motivational phrases are similar to themes in a story Theme An opinion about life or human nature or society that the writer shares with the reader

Theme When reading a text there is a message or something that the writer wants the reader to remember. This is important to completely understand the intensions/purpose of the writer’s work.

For Example The Ant and the Grasshopper In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest. "Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?” "I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same.” "Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; we have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew…. It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

You Try – Think Pair Share You will be given two more short stories Read the stories with your partner and write down the theme or lesson of the story

Homework Theme dictates how the plot or storyline will turn out.
