2 UNDP and Caribbean SIDS In implementing the mandates of the BPOA and MSI, UNDP has focused its support in 3 Areas: ADVOCACY FOR SIDS IN INTERNATIONAL FORA SPECIFIC TO VULNERABILITY TO CLIMATE CHANGE, SEA LEVEL RISE AND GLOBAL WARMING, ENERGY CHALLENGE

3 UNDP and Caribbean SIDS CAPACITY BUILDING: REGIONAL INSTITUTIONS: CARICOM & OECS CLIMATE CHANGE NEGOTIATING CAPACITY RESEARCH CENTRE PARTNERSHIPS: UWI Centre for Environment and Development

4 UNDP and Caribbean SIDS PROGRAMMING IN THEMATIC AREAS Disaster Risk Reduction: Caribbean Risk Management Initiative (CRMI) Phase I: 2004 – 2009 Phase II: 2010- 2012 Focused on Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados & OECS, Belize, Suriname

5 Caribbean Risk Management Initiative Increased capacity for disaster risk management and adaptation to climate change, through the means of promoting south/south collaboration within the Region. Increased investments in climate risk reduction projects Risk reduction and climate change adaptation integrated into development

6 Sustainable Energy Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme (CREDP): Creating enabling environment for Renewable Energy by addressing barriers Support for SIDSDOCK SIDS Sustainable Energy for ALL (SE4ALL) in Barbados in 2012; Jamaica Launch of SE4ALL 2012 Rapid Assessments for Sustainable Energy Development of Caribbean SIDS in partnership with the IDB

7 Support for National Consultation Process for 3rd International Meeting National consultations in 16 Caribbean SIDS leading to National Assessment Reports Support to this Meeting Support to the Inter-Regional Meeting Support towards strong Caribbean presence in Samoa

8 Future Direction for UNDP and Caribbean SIDS Facilitating South/South Cooperation between BRICS and SIDS, and SIDS/SIDS Cooperation Addressing energy security in SIDS with emphasis on renewable energy Advocacy for the debt challenge Partnering with Governments to address the Youth Challenge, and Citizen security Ensuring that the SIDS Agenda is integrated in the Post-2015 Development Agenda
