1 StratMoS Activity C-4 Presentation by Work Package Coordinator Michael Stie Laugesen FDT – Association of Danish Transport and Logistics Centres Copenhagen 11.03.2010

Session overview The idea behind the following session is that FDT, as WP C coordinator, would like to follow a slightly different approach for this 4 th activity under WP C, compared with the first three activities. FDT has come up with five possible topics under which the partners are supposed to take ownership of. Thereafter it will be the partners responsibility to structure and undertake the analyses under these topics We supply you with the headlines and some inspiration and you contribute with the descriptions and the analyses. The outcome will be five papers (20-25 pages each) dealing with the topics that we decide upon today.

The overall heading for all activities under C-4 is: Analysis of organisational and administrative issues in relation to MoS and SSS

C-4 Mindmap

Periphery issues 1 st Project idea: Paper focusing on the opportunities for financing schemes in peripheral areas of the North Sea Region. Sometimes the EU funding mechanism are not suited for supporting transports in peripheral regions, due to many different reasons. Is this a problem or it is a fact that the people living in the peripheral areas have to accept? Comments – centralising to get hub volumes (Stavanger) Possible partner in charge of this task: Rogaland County? Possible partners participating in this task: Aberdeen City? - Vest Agder - Hordaland Aberdeenshire Council? Troms County? Napier University

Overcoming bottlenecks 2 nd Project idea: The first three WP C reports have shown that there are vast opportunities in cooperation both between ports and with companies in the port hinterland, so why are companies within the transport industry so reluctant to share ideas and cooperate on e.g. shared intermodal solutions? Analysis of bottlenecks – traffic, administration, supply chain Pim – administration inputs Possible partner in charge of this task: FDT Possible partners participating in this task: Rogaland County Flemish Ministry Hafen Hamburg Marketing? Norwegian Coastal Administration (maybe)

Application challenges 3 rd Project idea: Partners within the StratMoS project have several times submitted applications for EU funding (Marco Polo II). Each time the applications were rejected. What are the applicants experiences with the application process and where would they like to see improvements in the help they can get when applying? Possible partner in charge of this task: Napier University? Possible partners participating in this task: Hordaland? FDT? Flemish Ministry? Vest Agder?

Overcoming the economic crisis 4 th Project idea: Paper on how new ideas and concrete concepts, e.g. small accumulated improvements in efficiency and reduction of transport cost on a total transport chain, can lead to better competition, thus utilising that the crisis situation opens up for new ways of logistics thinking. Comments- focus topic area – look at professional associations, etc. how can we utilise the slack time, what has been documented and done before? Partners to look at professional journals in their own countries – comparison between theory and practice Possible partner in charge of this task: TUHH Possible partners participating in this task: FDT? Port of Amsterdam?

New intermodal solutions combining containers and RO/RO 5 th Project idea: Paper investigating the possibilities for using Con/Ro ships in the North Sea region. The paper could focus on a market analysis of Con/Ro possibilities in a number of countries around the North Sea. Could Con/Ro be a solution with higher chance of success than pure container routes and RO/RO routes? New transport unit technologies (ie. Collapsible containers) Comments – potential for using these ships… Possible partner in charge of this task: Axel (HHM) Possible partners participating in this task: FDT? Norwegian Coastal Administration? Hull University? TUHH

Other Ideas 5 th Hub Scaling: Assessment of logistics role/functions and hinterlands of hub ports at a different spatial levels – case study Aberdeenshire Aberdeen City Aberdeenshire FDT Norwegian Coastal Administration TUHH? (Maybe) Rogaland (maybe) XXX Possible partner in charge of this task: XXX Possible partners participating in this task: XXX

Project follow up FDT will send out a “topic summary template” which needs to be completed and sent back to us by the end of June – this will be a one page summary of what you will be focussing on and how you will carry out the work. An interim version of the paper should be submitted to FDT by end August 2010. All papers are completed by primo October 2010, after which FDT plus a list of partners (to be named at a later stage) will ensure the quality control of the papers. Workshop in Norway in ultimo October 2010 where the findings are discussed and elaborated upon. Final copies (with comments from workshop in Norway included) to be delivered mid-November
