WE ARE CALLED TO BE CATHOlIC “No Longer Slaves, But Brothers and Sisters” more than a call; it is our vocation Pope Francis selected the theme “No Longer Slaves, But Brothers and Sisters” for the World Day of Peace celebration last year. As Catholics, as members of the Body of Christ, the Church, this is more than a call; it is our vocation, born of our baptism.

TO UNDERSTAND “CULTURE” IT REQUIRES “COMMUNICATION” ( THE WHO & WHY ) A faith that does not affect a person’s culture is a faith not fully embraced, not entirely thought out, not faithfully lived Christifidelses Laici, #59 CULTURE is… Social, Learned and Psychological… RACE is… Biological, Inherited, Can’t be changed

DEFINITIONS Culture: Culture: The accumulated store of symbols, ideas and material products associated with a social system. Culture creates a shared identity and establishes the boundaries of a human group by defining behavior pattern that allow individuals to feel confident when relating to others in their group. Enculturation: Enculturation: The natural process of cultural acquisition from birth through interaction with the social environment. Exposure to the values, behaviors, expectation and assumptions of the culture begin at home; later on, peer groups, social institutions such as schools and churches, and the media play a greater role Inculturation: Inculturation: The primary missionary task of the Church with respect to the world- to permeate every culture and social context with the values of the Gospel and the example of a Christian life Acculturation: Acculturation: The process of adaptation and developing cultural competence in a new cultural setting.

WHAT & HOW… FROM MULTICULUTRAL MINISTRY TO INTERCULTUALLY COMPETENT – THAT’S CATHOLIC First and Foremost it is Less about People & Culture more about US! If you change nothing – nothing will change. (KENOSIS)

Moving from a MULTICULTURAL MINISTRY MODEL TO INTERCULTURAL MINISTRY REQUIRES “NEWNESS” For all of you are ONE in Christ Jesus” -Gal 3:28b

HOW… PRACTICAL STEPS Pray – Pray – Pray Sharing stories Listening by observing Doing faith and community together Start somewhere (small, simple, organic) Share non language based commonalities –Art (Music, Dance, Pictures, Drawing, Acting etc.) –Humanism (our humanity, suffering/joys) Justice & Service –Spirituality (our developmental spiritual maturity) “Can’t be everything to everyone but can be something to someone”

COMMUNITY OF COMMUNITIES “Intercultural also means intergenerational” CHILDRENTEENS ADULTS

FINAL COMMENTS Must work with, for and by THE ENTIRE community “Acompanamiento” Remember AWARENESS isn’t enough – need KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Ask the Right Questions (Difficult Questions) Move beyond Respectful, Risk! Be intentional, be integrative, be INTERCULTURAL! Practice DISCIPLINE MIND (our thoughts, what we say or what we don’t say) BODY (our actions, and re-actions) HEART (our desires, our dreams and our hopes, fears and joys)

HOMEWORK Make “new” friends (sharing stories, values, beliefs, personal context, build a new story) “Conocer” your community! Dream/Discern where God is calling you to newness in ministry! Make your plans/decisions with (not for) ppl (think dimensions of diversity) Go make disciples for Christ! Real disciples who make more disciples!

PATH OF INDIVIDUAL INTERCULTURAL LEARNING Interculturization Selective Adoption Appreciation/Valuing Acceptance/Respect Understanding Awareness Ethnocentricity Hoopes Learning is like a journey, in that, it is a path that we follow to enlightenment. A model developed by David Hoopes, gives us a model to cultural competency. Competency implies having the capacity to function effectively. Mutlicultural

Cultural Differences Understanding Empathy Deepening Relationship Result Openness Acceptance Trust Adaptability Suspicion Fear Superiority Prejudice Facts of Cross-Cultural Living (The Inevitables) Alienation Withdrawal Broken Relationships Frustration Misunderstanding Confusion Tension Embarrassment Aggression DISSONANCEDISSONANCE Observe Inquire Listen Initiate Criticize Rationalize Isolate Self Your Approach Your Response People who turn you off, people you’re afraid of, have a message for you…They’re triggering something within you. You need them -Richard Rohr – Radical Grace: daily Meditations Cultural Differences

The AWARE Model A ACCEPT the other person's behavior without judging it based on what that behavior means in your culture. W WONDER what the other person's behavior means in his or her culture, rather than what it means in your culture. A ASK what it means to the person, showing a respectful interest. R RESEARCH and read about the other person's culture so you are able to place their behavior in the context of their cultural worldview. (For skillful practitioners, learning is an ongoing process. We are never "finished" with our learning.) E EXPLAIN what their behavior means in your culture. Demonstrate or describe the behaviors in your culture that would express similar feelings or meanings, so they can learn new behaviors that will help them function in your culture *Based on material developed by Noel Day, Polaris Research & Development, San Francisco

The LEARN Model: L Listen with empathy and understanding to the person's perception of the situation E Elicit culturally relevant information and Explain your perception of the situation A Acknowledge the similarities and differences between your perceptions and their's R Recommend options/alternatives and Respect the person and their choices N Negotiate agreement

OREMOS Lord we pray…. To see the world from the heart of God To judge the reality from the saving act of your son who gave his life for humanity and To act in the church moved by the Spirit for the people of our world so WE all may have new life as we become missionary disciples of Christ. We must move from a Conservation style Pastoral to a Missionary Style Pastoral -Bishops of CELAM
