Progress Made Towards Employer Engagement Progress Made Towards Employer Engagement

Accomplished – Hired a new WBL Coordinator Challenges – Safety of students at younger ages such as welding. Full time instructors have other duties assigned and it makes it difficult for them to leave the classroom environment to meet with employers. Employers want to meet with college employees to discuss opportunities, but their time is also limited. Employers are sometimes unaware of work-based learning opportunities that they can provide college students. Prospective Goals – Newly hired WBL Coordinator has been attending monthly meetings of the NCWorks Grant Committee since she’s been hired. She has been engaging with employers, she has placed students in WBL opportunities, and she is meeting with all CTE program chairs to find out how she can engage with the students/employers. She understands the concept of completion with a promise to interview. Continue to build on Manufacturing Day to include new employers on the LCC campus in an effort to increase the number of employers for job opportunities and work-based learning opportunities. Continue to meet with the HR Associations to discuss opportunities for WBL and job placement for students and to offer advanced classes for their current employees. Continue to develop WBL opportunities. Continue to introduce Career Pathways to new employers in the area to ensure they understand the goals of the program.

Continue to work with high school counselors, Advisory Board members and local employers to ensure quality programs, equipment, and student interest, and required skill sets. Continue to work with the committee to review and assess the awarding of credit for any prior learning to accelerate the educational and career advancement of students. How will the College continue the programs started?

Lessons Learned Successes LCPS readily accepted the idea of career pathways for students and immediately began working with the College to complete 12 pathways. Jones County and Greene County wanted to be part of the process well before we were ready to move forward with their schools. It has been a privilege working with all of the high schools in the 3 county service area. Program Chairs in CIM and WELD immediately accepted and understood the process and the plan. These program chairs met with several employers to determine the best situation for their WBL students. What should be done differently – The Committee should have recognized early on the non-commitment from some of the committee members and hired a Career Pathways Coordinator.

Plans for the Future Involve the Advisory Committee members for each program to get their input into programs, skills, and employer needs Collaborate with NCWorks Career Center Continue contacting employers for “promise to interview” students who participate in the program and complete a work-based learning opportunity Track students in the program to ensure Pathway Career Advising and completion Research additional ways to market the program

Plans for the Future Develop strategic plan for 2015-2016 including benchmarks, assessment, and action plans Develop and maintain individual industry contacts Strengthen faculty/employer/student relationships Explore implementation of ACA 220 – Professional Transition Explore integration of Career Readiness Certificate into curriculum Enhance communication among parents, students, faculty, and industry
