1 Barrie A. Wigmore Elected a Trustee at the Metropolitan Museum Barrie A. Wigmore has been elected to the Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it was announced today by James R. Houghton, the Museum's Chairman. The election took place at the November 12 meeting of the Board. Mr. Wigmore is a Retired Partner of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., a company he joined in 1970. Before retiring in 1988, he headed the corporate finance department responsible for utility, pipeline, telecommunications, and oil and gas financing. He is the author of two books and numerous academic articles on financial markets. "The Metropolitan Museum is pleased to welcome Barrie Wigmore to its Board of Trustees," commented Mr. Houghton in announcing the election. "Through his association with the Museum in the past – and especially through his abiding interest in education and American art – he has helped strengthen our activities and enhance our collections in innumerable ways." Philippe de Montebello, Director of the Metropolitan, noted: "For more than two decades, the Museum has enjoyed the generous friendship of Barrie Wigmore and his wife Deedee. Active supporters of the Museum's Education Fund and donors to The Fund for the Met, they also have helped the Museum acquire significant new works for its collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century American decorative arts. Indeed, the Deedee Wigmore Galleries – which opened in The American Wing in 2000 and focus on the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements – were expanded this year to highlight the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany." Mr. Wigmore is also a member of the Major Gifts committee, the Metropolitan Museum's Chairman's Council, the Friends of The American Wing, the William Cullen Bryant Fellows, and the American Decorative Arts Visiting Committee. Mr. Wigmore was elected a Fellow for Life in May 2000. Mrs. Wigmore is a Benefactor. Born in Canada and educated at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Oregon, and Oxford University, Barrie Wigmore is an honorary fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, and is scheduled to receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the University of Saskatchewan this fall.
