Listening Task 6 SCRIPT Hostess: Good evening and welcome back to Thirty-Minute Talk Show. We’re now in the studio of the ABC Network. Just now the two guests here gave their opinions about TV. It seems they don’t fancy TV much. Now, let’s listen to the views from some audience members. Here comes the first call. Hello! May I have your name? Man: Hello! It’s Peter Lee. H:You’re now on the Thirty-Minute Talk Show. We’re talking about TV. What’s your opinion? Do you agree with the two guests? M: Er... personally, I can’t agree with them, because I really enjoy watching television. I think TV is really great. You know... It presents a vivid world in front of us. It tells us what’s happening right now in the world. H: Yes... M: And... everyone should admit that TV has more advantages than disadvantages. So if you ask me, I should say TV is good. H: Thank you for joining us. Mr. Lee, good-bye. M: Bye.

Reading B Text My favorite types of movies are comedies and romances. However, I can’t really think of a way to make clear about my sense of humor. I suppose you’ll just have to look over a list of my favorite comedies to get a feel for that. As for romance, Casablanca is my all time favorite movie. Reading B Text I prefer dramas that treat people as born with flaws rather than just “good guys and bad guys”. I enjoy a good allusion or two, but not those on which I will spend days before I can get the slightest idea. The best dramas always give me new understandings about someone else. Reading B Text I don’t like many action movies or horror movies. The ones I do like usually have difficult problems and good solutions. I don’t like to follow the characters into some complex situation only to have him or her get out with unbelievable coincidences, or with the help of some too smart or too stupid characters. Reading B Text Unlike others, I don’t get too upset when screenwriters use some plot point that’s been done before, although I do expect them to do better than just giving us a big car chase at the end of the movie. I don’t, however, approve of re-making classic movies. Reading B Text One more thing—it’s important to me that the characters have a little depth. Better we learn more about the characters as the movie progresses; it’s not good if all the character developments happen in the first five minutes and in the rest of the movie the characters just follow the path set before them. And it’s even worse if the screenwriter uses a stereotype for ANY major character. One more thing—it’s important to me that the characters have a little depth. Writing for General Purposes Development by Comparison and Contrast To present different things or different aspects of one thing in a passage, a writer tends to highlight the similarities or differences to deeply impress readers about the distinctive features. To achieve this purpose, the writer often uses comparison or contrast in description. Comparison is usually used to indicate the similarities, while contrast is used to show the differences. Bikes have some advantages and disadvantages. First, they are very handy and convenient. It can carry you to anywhere you like in town and does not need a large parking place. Also, a bike, unlike a car, does not cause air pollution. What is more, it does good to your health if you ride it regularly. However, bikes have also brought about some problems. For example, they have made the streets very crowded, and some riders park their bikes anywhere, which leaves the city in a state of disorder. In the previous paragraph, the writer uses contrast to present the advantages and disadvantages of bikes. In the next paragraph, however, the writer uses both comparison and contrast in describing a newly married couple.

Writing for General Purposes Development by Comparison and Contrast Tim and Sally are a newly married couple. Both of them have jobs. Tim works in a bank downtown in the business district. He drives to his office. Sally has a law degree and works in a law office. She is now gaining the experience that she needs as she dreams of having her own office someday. Both of them grew up in a small town, so the trees and flowers in the park often remind them of their families. They miss the country life very much. Comparison is used to indicate their shared features: both have jobs; both are from a small town; both miss country life. Contrast is used to indicate their differences: Tim works in a bank; Sally works in a law office.

Make use of the following sentences to form a paragraph. Writing for General Purposes Task 2 Sample Writing: Men remain attached to friends, but they do not necessarily keep in close touch. They call their families every other week or so, but a large amount of that is “checking in”. They talk more about what they do rather than their feelings. As for new relationships, men are interested in finding a “buddy” ( 伙伴 ) much more than an emotional confident ( 知己 ). For women, however, staying connected with families and friends plays a central role in their lives away from home. They talk long if they call. They tend to write long letters to share their experiences and sometimes work out their misunderstandings. Women know the relationships they want and tend to express their feelings to their friends. 1. Men remain attached to friends, but they do not necessarily keep in close touch. 2. Men call their families every other week or so, but a large amount of that is “checking in” ( 打招呼 ).
