Cellular Processes

Cellular Respiration The process by which the mitochondria take in oxygen to break down glucose (food) to produce energy (ATP), CO 2, and water. Importance: –The cell uses the energy to build, repair, and reproduce cells. –Cellular respiration provides energy to the cell so it can carry out its life processes.

Cellular Respiration Oxygen Food (glucose) Energy (stays in the cell And is used build, repair, And Reproduce cells) CO2 is released into The blood stream as wasteAnd carried to lungs to Be released Water (most is released As waste but some Stays in the cell)

Respiration Equation C 6 H 12 O6 + 6O 2 --> 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + energy (ATP)

Photosynthesis Process by which the chloroplast in the plants capture sunlight and combine that with Carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose and oxygen The sugar is either used by the plant or stored in a vacuole

Photosynthesis Inside chloroplast And either used By the plant or stored As starch Release by humans And animals as waste Taken in by animals And humans

Photosynthesis Equation 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + sunlight  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

Waste Elimination Organisms rid the cells of waste products that could be harmful to the cell As waste particles accumulate in a cell, the waste will be moved out of the cell and eliminated. The waste will move from a more concentrated area to a less concentrated area.

Waste Elimination Diffusion – Process of materials moving from a high concentration to a low concentration; does not require energy

Osmosis – type of diffusion; when water moves from a high concentration to a low concentration; does not need energy

Waste Elimination If the cell does not get rid of the waste, the waste will become toxic and kill the cell.

Mitosis Mitosis is cell reproduction and it occurs in the nucleus of the cell Mitosis enables the cell to make an exact copy of itself

Mitosis Mitosis is the process of cell division, which results in the production of two daughter cells from a single parent cell. The daughter cells are identical to one another and the parent cell. Mitosis is needed for growth, replacement, and asexual reproduction.

Your Turn Within the group you are placed create a play that shows the cellular process you are given. Include in your play why the process is important to cell and/or organism. You must have a script and you may use signs to help others recognize who or what you are.
