2  Definition of Plagiarism? The copying of another's paper with the intention of representing it as one's own" (Lathrop and Foss p163). The definition of deliberate or intentional plagiarism includes the theft of another person's ideas. www.academicintegrity.utas.edu.au/terms.html www.academicintegrity.utas.edu.au/terms.html  Intentional plagiarism is when the writer purposefully uses someone else's ideas or work without properly acknowledging the source or not acknowledging the source at all (Guiliano 22). www.uah.edu/library/turnitin/studentterm.htm www.uah.edu/library/turnitin/studentterm.htm

3  Because it is copying of another’s work and representing it as your own? This is illegal!  Get this in your head- if you use another’s work you have to give credit that individual in a works cited page. (Period)  If you use some parts of another’s work you also have to give them credit- Copying and pasting and changing one word is still plagiarism….. Please understand this!!!!

4  Best Practices for Research and Drafting  Reading and Note-Taking  In your notes, always mark someone else's words with a big Q, for quote, or use big quotation marks!  Indicate in your notes which ideas are taken from sources with a big S, and which are your own insights (ME)  When information comes from sources, record relevant documentation in your notes (book and article titles; URLs on the Web)

5  If you're having trouble summarizing, try writing your paraphrase or summary of a text without looking at the original, relying only on your memory and notes.  Check your paraphrase or summary against the original text; correct any errors in content accuracy, and be sure to use quotation marks to set off any exact phrases from the original text.  Check your paraphrase or summary against sentence and paragraph structure, as copying those is also considered plagiarism.  Put quotation marks around any unique words or phrases that you cannot or do not want to change, e.g., "savage inequalities" exist throughout our educational system (Kozol). An example..
