3 LO How does Harper Lee use language to give us an impression of the character Dolphus Raymond?

4 Find quotes to show… The children think Dolphus is an alcoholic. The children respect Dolphus. Dolphus is a wealthy man. Dolphus prefers the company of African Americans. Maycomb’s attitude towards mixed race children. Scout’s opinion of Dophus’s child. Maycomb’s attitude towards mixed marriages.

5 Using PEED to write about character The reader gets the impression that Dolphus Raymond is isolated and separated from the rest of the white population of Maycomb, ‘in the far corner o f the square’ and ‘lives by himself’, even though he is white and obviously wealthy, ‘he owns all one side of the riverbank’ and ‘huge wedding’. He is an outcast from Maycomb society because ‘he’s got a coloured woman and all sorts of mixed chillun’ this was considered unacceptable at that time in Alabama. Therefore Dolphus lives and socialises with the black community ‘he likes em better’n he likes us’.
