1 First Draft Thesis Statements

2 ▪Some of the themes from Trifles are guilt, loss, innocence, death, being trapped, loneliness, voice, priorities, and brokenness. I think the most important theme in Trifles was freedom. ▪The main theme of Trifles is the idea of revenge in the sense of overcoming entrapment/oppression to reclaim one’s freedom. ▪Trifles is a play written by Susan Glaspell that takes place in a lonely, quiet home. ▪In her play Trifles, Susan Glaspell incorporated multiple symbolisms to signify passion and powerful emotions of her characters. ▪Loneliness is the recurring theme within the play, Trifles, by Susan Glaspell, apparent in the characters, setting, and literary devices. ▪The story Trifles represents how if you keep pushing a person, no matter who they are, everyone has a breaking point. 3 ▪The main theme that the story revolves around is the idea of losing happiness that is replaced by turbulent insanity. ▪Innocence doesn’t linger long and only leaves behind secrets. ▪In Trifles, the main theme perceived from the play is people are completely different behind closed doors. ▪In the play, Trifles, the theme of brokenness is displayed continually throughout the story. ▪The main theme of Trifles is that death has no universal, single definition. ▪The conflict of happiness and abuse is demonstrated symbolically throughout the story to provide justification for the murder of Mr. Wright. ▪Trifles is a feminist piece of literature who’s underlying theme is gender roles and the power struggles they create. Thesis Statements

4 ▪The main theme of Trifles is that a controlling, empty marriage will lead to despair. ▪Within the text of Trifles by Susan Glaspell, the theme is freedom, which overshadows the events and behaviors occurring in the play. ▪The main theme in Glaspell’s play Trifles is the theme of brokenness and how it affects relationships. ▪In her play, Trifles, Susan Glaspell reflects the seemingly insignificance of the woman’s role, but displays the consequences of taking those small things for granted. ▪The theme I believe is most prominent in Trifles is the lack of children and how that somewhat ruined Mr. and Mrs. Wright’s marriage. ▪The main theme in Trifles was that Mrs. Wright’s joy and vibrance was squeezed out of her due to the caging marriage to Mr. Wright. Thesis Statements

5 ▪The factor of coldness and how Mrs. Wright seemed to slowly lose her mind was a constant recurring theme in Trifles. ▪I believe that the main theme of this piece is trust and freedom in marriage. ▪In Trifles, by Susan Glaspell, the bird cage mainly represented how Mrs. Wright felt about her relationship with Mr. Wright. ▪The main theme was the loneliness Mrs. Wright was haunted by. ▪The story depicted the difference between the lives of men and women, along with their relationship. ▪The purity that was once ever so present turned into the dark depression of Mrs. Wright.
