Netaji Subhash Engineering College DTH stands for Direct-To-Home Television. DTH is defined as the reception of satellite programs with a personal dish in an individual home.

Netaji Subhash Engineering College Components of DTH System: There are five major components of DTH: The Programming Source The Broadcast center The Satellite The Satellite Dish The Receiver

Netaji Subhash Engineering College The Programming Source: Programming sources are simply the channels that provide programming. The providers get programming from two major sources: International turnaround channels (HBO, ESPN, CNN, SET, B4U etc). Various local channels (Sahara TV, Doordarshan etc). These channels have a distribution center that beams their programming to a geostationary satellite.

Netaji Subhash Engineering College The Broadcast Centre: The broadcast center or provider uses large satellite dishes to pick up these analog and digital signals from several sources. It converts all of this programming into a high- quality, compressed digital stream (MPEG-2 format). It beams the digital stream into the provider satellite with encryption for providing the programs only for the customers.

Netaji Subhash Engineering College The Satellite: The provider’s satellite picks up the encrypted & compressed programs and send it to the ground. Provider satellite Ground

Netaji Subhash Engineering College The Satellite Dish: A satellite dish is just a special kind of antenna designed to focus on a specific broadcast source. The standard dish consists of a parabolic surface and a central feed horn. Let’s take a look: Dish Home TV ConnectionOnOff Feed Horn

Netaji Subhash Engineering College The Receiver: It de-scrambles the received signals by using decoding chip with decryption algorithm and security keys. The provider can communicate with the chip via satellite signal for necessary adjustment & illegal descramblers (ECM). It also converts the digital compressed programs to analog signal for the TV. DTH-Receiver

Netaji Subhash Engineering College There are the following steps : At first different programs are broadcasted from different program-sources. The provider selects programs and beams a broadcast signal to the satellite being used by the it. The satellites receive the signals from the broadcast station and rebroadcast them to the ground. How Does It Work ?

Netaji Subhash Engineering College The viewer’s dish picks up the signal from the satellite (or multiple satellites in the same part of the sky) and passes it on to the receiver in the viewer’s house.

Netaji Subhash Engineering College Let’s Take A Look On The System : Provider Program-Source Home Geo- stationary Satellite Provider Satellite DTH SYSTEM

Netaji Subhash Engineering College DTH in India: DTH services were first proposed in India in 1996. But they did not pass approval because there were concerns over national security and a cultural invasion. Finally in 2000, DTH was allowed. The new policy requires all operators to set up earth stations in India within 12 months of getting a license. DTH licenses in India will cost $2.14 million and will be valid for 10 years.

The detailed guidelines for starting the DTH services in India were issued by the government on March 15, 2001, followed by guidelines in March 2003 for uplinking of foreign-owned news channels. So far only three companies have applied for starting the DTH broadcasting service. These are Space TV, A.S.C enterprises, and Essel Shyam Communication. Doordarshan is also planning to launch DTH TV satellite with Prasar Bharati allocating Rs 5000 million for the project.

Netaji Subhash Engineering College Companies: There are different companies of DTH in India. There is a list of these companies:

CONCLUSION DTH TV is all set to revolutionize the Indian entertainment scenario. It promises quality TV reception even in shadow areas and many value added services such as the Internet and interactive multimedia. A study by European Space Agency on next generation broadcasting satellite says…”Today two-way satellite Internet service, compared to cable or DSL is an inferior service despite being overpriced and those providing two-way satellite connections are losing money. All in all, DTH offers immense opportunities to both the broadcasters and the viewers.
