1 6.4 Exponential Growth and Decay
Use and identify exponential growth and decay functions. Interpret and rewrite exponential growth and decay functions. Solve real-life problems involving exponential growth and decay.

2 Exponential Growth Functions
Exponential growth functions occur when a quantity increase by the same factor over equal intervals of time.

3 Example 1: Using an Exponential Growth Function
The inaugural attendance of an annual music festival is 150,000. The attendance y increases by 8% each year. a) Write an exponential growth function that represents the attendance after t years.

4 Example 1: Using an Exponential Growth Function
The inaugural attendance of an annual music festival is 150,000. The attendance y increases by 8% each year. b) How many people will attend the festival in the fifth year? Round your answer to the nearest thousand. The value t=4 represents the 5th year because t=0 would be the 1st year.

5 You try!

6 Exponential Decay Functions
Exponential decay occurs when a quantity decreases by the same factor of equal intervals of time.

7 Example 2: Identifying Exponential growth and Decay
Determine whether each table represents an exponential growth function, exponential decay function, or neither. a. b.

8 You try! Determine whether the table is an exponential growth function, an exponential decay function, or neither.

9 Example 3: Interpreting Exponential Functions
Determine whether each function represents an exponential growth or exponential decay. Identify the percent rate of change.

10 Example 3: Interpreting Exponential Functions
Determine whether each function represents an exponential growth or exponential decay. Identify the percent rate of change.

11 Example 4: Rewriting Exponential Functions
Rewrite each function to determine whether it represents exponential growth or exponential decay.

12 Example 4: Rewriting Exponential Functions
Rewrite each function to determine whether it represents exponential growth or exponential decay.

13 You try! 1 – r = .92 -r = -.08 r = .08 Exponential decay 8%
Determine whether the function represents exponential growth of exponential decay. Identify the percent rate of change. 1 – r = .92 -r = -.08 r = .08 Exponential decay 8% 1 + r = 1.2 r = .2 Exponential growth 20%

14 You try! Rewrite the function to determine whether it represents exponential growth or exponential decay. 𝑓 𝑡 =3 (1.22) 𝑡 Exponential Growth 𝑦= .9 (.95) 𝑡 Exponential Decay

15 Solving Real-Life Problems
Exponential growth functions are used in real-life situations involving compound interest. Although, interest earned is expressed as an annual rate, the interest is usually compounded more frequently than once per year. So, we must modify the exponential growth function for compound interest problems. Weekly= 52 times per year Monthly=12 times per year Quarterly= 4 times per year Semi-Annually= 2 times per year Annually= 1 time per year

16 Compound Interest

17 Example 5: Writing a Function
You deposit $100 in a savings account that earns 6% annual interest compounded monthly. Write a function that represents the balance after t years.

18 Example 6: Solving a Real-Life Problem
The table shows the balance of a money market account over time. a) Write a function that represents the balance after t years.

19 Example 6: Solving a Real-Life Problem
b) Graph the function from part (a) and from Example 5 in the same coordinate plane. Compare the balances. 𝑦 =100 (1.005) 12𝑡 𝑦=100 (1.1) 𝑡 The money market account earns 10% and the savings account earns 6% interest each year. So, the balance of the money market account increases faster.

20 You try! You deposit $800 in a savings account that earns 9% annual interest compounded monthly. Write and graph a function that represents the balance y (in dollars) after t years. 𝑦=800 ( ) 12𝑡 𝑦=800 (1.0075) 12𝑡
