BU CIRTL Needs Assessment and Resource Allocation Process Part II Bennett Goldberg and Kathryn Spilios

BU CIRTL Next Steps  Common outcomes, high value Network needs  Overall results and rankings of CN activties  Cost-Priority matrix  Breakout Discussion – two questions:  How valid are these results? What new data would you need?  Are these results actionable?  Report out, reflect on process  Discuss resourcing new common needs  Vote later this morning - allocation

BU CIRTL Our Common Network Needs  Curate/repository of courses/workshops 4  Mentor Database across Network for TAR 2  Curate/repository of MOOC and TAR 2  Curate/Repository of Assessment 2  Train the Trainers 2  Regional Meetings/Mentoring 2  Marketing and Advertising 2 All had med to high priorities, low to med costs

BU CIRTL Cost vs Priority

BU CIRTL Overall results

BU CIRTL Breakouts 1. How valid are these results? What new data would you need? 2. Are these results actionable? 15 min….

BU CIRTL Validity? One table’s statement: Spent the time, gap analysis, five groups…. These results are valid, representing the opinions of the people in the room and our advocacy for those not represented.

BU CIRTL Our Common Network Needs  Curate/repository/wrapping of courses/workshops 4  Mentor Database across Network for TAR 2  Curate/repository of MOOC and TAR 2  Curate/Repository of Assessment 2  Train the Trainers 2  Regional Meetings/Mentoring 2  Marketing and Advertising 2 All had med to high priorities, low to med costs By show of hands, does the CIRTL Network want to work now to resource these activities:

BU CIRTL Short courses and workshops  Teaching with Technology  Subject Specific Short course - Teaching Intro Chem 2  Teaching statement/philosophy  Online workshops w/ pre- and post

BU CIRTL Additional Network Needs  Connect to PUI's  Expertise database for matching  Eval and Research on Network  More TAR sessions  Develop Assessment Questions linked to CIRTL Learning Outcomes  CIRTL Writes Hybrid Courses; Local Wrapper  CIRTL Youtube Channel

BU CIRTL Goals: 1.Engage in gap analysis (done…) 2.Combine into needs assessment chart - now 3.Begin to allocate network resources for all CIRTL cross-network activities - tomorrow 4.Reflect on the process – double loop learning To align cross-network activities, existing and future, to the local and cross-network goals and to resource these needs.

BU CIRTL Cost, Impact, Priority  Cost: On a scale, high to low, and relative to other activities, the cost is the effort to produce the activity.  Impact: On a scale, high to low, and relative to other activities, the impact is the combined value of the activity toward achieving local and cross-network goals.  Priority: On a scale, high to low, and relative to other activities, the priority is a subjective measure of which cross-network activities are more important to resource than others.

BU CIRTL Framework Principles  Transparency – the process, assessment matrix, and institution’s contributions will be published on the CIRTL website.  Inclusiveness – the process includes all voices at all steps.  Data driven – the outcomes of all network activities, opinions of activity providers and participants will drive decisions through actionable data.

BU CIRTL Sequence of actions in needs/resource framework PURPOSE: to reach a collective (not necessarily a consensus) understanding and prioritization of the needs of the CIRTL network 14 Needs assessment, resource costs and activity prioritization Resource description, categorization, and valuation. Mapping resources to needs Data collection and feedback CURRENT RESOURCES: the time, effort, and skill set of the Institutional Leaders and their local teams who contribute to cross-network activities MAPPING: uses existing CIRTL Network model of category contributions; allows local institutional choice and optimized collective choices DATA: outcomes of Network goals and the value to those providing the activity. Data should be actionable - an activity is so valuable we offer it more often; or an activity is so valueless we decide not to resource it.

BU CIRTL Your challenge  5 breakouts with 4+ institutions each  Stage 1: Discussion of Cross-Network (CN) activities and data  Stage 2: Evaluate cost, impact, and priority of CN activities  Stage 3: Each institution takes turn presenting a proposed CN resource/activity from their gap analysis. Fill in the Needs Chart.  Stage 4: Engage in a a discussion and evaluate cost, impact and priority of newly posted activities.

BU CIRTL Your challenge  5 breakouts with 4+ institutions each  Stage 1: Discussion of of Cross-Network (CN) activities  Stage 2: Evaluate cost, impact, and priority of CN activities  Stage 3: Each institution takes turn presenting a proposed CN resource/activity from their gap analysis. Fill in the Needs Chart.  Stage 4: Engage in a a discussion and evaluate cost, impact and priority of newly posted activities -- Group report from each breakout on major new resource need discussion, as well as thorny content or process issues (after breakout) -- Five different needs matrices combined to a single matrix, used to populate cost-priority matrix (evening) Tomorrow : Presentation of collective needs matrix, collective cost-priority matrix. -- Trial electronic voting by each institution on their priorities.
