2 European Space Agency ESA SSA-SWE Activities Background There are many threats for the European orbital infrastructure  Space debris and micro-particles  Satellite collisions  Space weather ESA is a space systems developer and one of the big European satellite operators  16 satellites in operation and 12 missions in preparation ESA has a strong interest in => protection of European space infrastructure => protection of ground infrastructure dependant of space segment => protection of ground infrastructure sensitive to space weather ESA has expertise in implementing and operating space systems => Architectural role and obligation to participate to the developments in the SSA sector

4 European Space Agency ESA SWE Near and Medium Term Objectives Establishing and validating a ”model” of an SSA network Continued use of existing national, European and ESA assets Continue development of precursor services Definition of the process of services provision in a user friendly and infrastructure transparent way Ensured continuous availability of the mission critical services Establishment of new space-based sensors  Hosted payloads on ESA and other European missions  Development of dedicated SWE missions (e.g. KuaFu)

5 European Space Agency ESA Long Term Role in SWE Area ESA know-how has a key role in definition of the European SSA architecture – including SSA-SWE Segment ESA works in close coopeation with its Member States and European institutions (e.g. EC, EEAS, EDA,...) The objective of the work is to support the process for:  Definition of the organisational structure for overseeing the full SSA system-of-systems  Identification of European service providers in each SSA segments  Development of selected ground and space-based sensors for SWE  Establishment of pre-operational SWE services  R&D activities supporting the future SSA system

6 European Space Agency Evolution of ESA SSA-SWE Activities Federated approach for the SWE services will be continued and enhanced  Services based on SSA Mission and Customer requirements  Service provision based on European expert groups => Expert Service Centres  Number of participants in the ESCs is expected to increase  New ESCs will be established based on the identified need => Interplanetary environment is one of the candidates  The ESC concept including the roles of the coordinating entities will be elaborated  Service Level Agreements (SLAs) will be established with the ESCs for the service provision => Coverage of the manpower costs and support for asset maintenance

7 European Space Agency Enhancement of SSA-SWE Services SSA Precursor Service Review: Precursor services from SSA PP are already providing added value for the user community in Europe There are known gaps in the currently available services => Roadmap to address the gaps and to develop missing services => Utilisation of building blocks for new services already existing or under development in Europe => Establishment of new services and development of new building blocks Particular focus areas for SSA-SWE include: Solar activity forecasting Heliospheric propagation modelling Geoimpact prediction and monitoring User requirements! Enhancement of the SSCC and improved user support

8 European Space Agency Enhancement of the SWE Observation System Ensured availability of observations is a prerequisite for SWE services Planned SSA-SWE Segment activities include  Networking of available national and European SWE assets  Consolidation of architecture of the SSA-SWE space segment  Continuing the development of SWE instrumentation in coordination with ESA tecnology programmes  Planning of dedicated SWE missions including missions to L1  Establishmend of agreements for observation data with asset owners SWE Data Centre will have a key role in data dissemination and archiving for all SSA-SWE missions

9 European Space Agency SSA-SWE Space Segment Development SSA Period 2 proposal includes SWE activities for  SWE instruments as hosted payloads  Radiation environment, s/c charging, solar x-ray, micro- particles, magnetic field and plasma measurements  Phase C/D development for selected instruments with identified flight opportunities  AO flight opportunities for nationally developed instruments  System studies for enhanced SWE monitoring away from the Sun-Earth line  Exploitation of data from existing and already planned SWE missions including e.g. Proba-2, Galileo FOC, MetOp, MTG,…  Phase A/B/C/D development of a wide-angle white-light coronagraph  Phase A/B studies on new space based SWE instruments

10 European Space Agency SSA-SWE Technologies Development Studying and prototyping essential new technologies for SWE observations Complementary to R&D activities in GSP, TRP, GSTP and research programs outside ESA Concentrate on high Technology Readiness Levels s Technologies addressed include  Magnetometers,  Plasma instruments and particle spectrometers,  Highly miniaturized radiation monitors,  Extreme UV solar imagers,  In-situ micro-particle sensors  Advanced ground based sensor technologies, especially for improved coverage over polar and ocean areas),  Ground data systems.
