Writing in AP Lit Day Two: Body Paragraphs Return to the AP LIT Writing Guide notes pages and make a sub- heading: Elements of Superior Body Paragraphs

Homework: Wiki 0 The task for the wiki is to create, as a class, the AP Study Guides for later use in the course. 0 For the first WIKI you will create a study guide for The Metamorphosis. 0 To receive full credit you must make three significant, substantial contributions by September 12 th at midnight. The earlier you make your contributions the easier it will be… (NAME) after contributions. 0 MAKE USER NAME ACTUAL NAME 0 TMFQHT3

Vital Elements of AP Body Paragraphs 0 Start with a topic sentence that makes the major CLAIM of the body paragraph. 0 If necessary offer the reader an ORIENTATION to your idea: who is speaking (it may be the narrator), to whom, what is the context? 0 TEXTUAL EVIDENCE: A specific example from the work used to provide evidence for your topic sentence. Present the evidence from the text—often you will need more than one piece to support your claim. Shoot for three: 0 Your evidence may be a phrase; 0 It may be a passage; 0 It may be purposeful paraphrase.

Vital Elements of AP Body Paragraphs 0 COMMENTARY & ANALYSIS: Your explanation and interpretation of the textual evidence. Follow each piece of evidence with your own commentary (explanation) and analysis of how the evidence supports your claim and the question you are answering. 0 Use embedded transitions between ideas to make the body paragraphs flow within and from one to the next. 0 Concluding Sentence: The last sentence of the body paragraph. It concludes the paragraph by tying the textual evidence and commentary back to the thesis.

Construction Tips for AP Body Paragraphs 0 Topic Sentence (include Major Claim) 0 Orientation & Context 0 Support/Text Evidence #1 0 Analysis/Commentary 0 Support/Text Evidence #2 0 Analysis/Commentary 0 Support/Text Evidence #3 0 Analysis/Commentary 0 Concluding Sentence

Let’s Try It! 0 Decide on organization & brainstorm CLAIMS

The Metamorphosis: A critic has said that one important measure of a superior work of literature is its ability to produce in the reader a healthy confusion of pleasure and disquietude. The Metamorphosis produces this "healthy confusion." Write an essay in which you explain the sources of the "pleasure and disquietude" experienced by the readers of the work.
