2 Why Rules Are Necessary Schools must be a safe and protected environment, where a student can come to learn without fear. ~Harry Wong

3 Two Kinds of Rules from Wong General  More encompassing  May cover a range of behaviors  Offer flexibility because they cover a wide variety of behaviors  Must be explained thoroughly for students to understand them Specific  To the point  Cover one behavior  Clearly state the expected student behavior  Limited to no more than five  Teacher must know what behaviors are important to him or her.

4 Brainstorming Rules In two minutes, list every possible rule you can think of for your classroom, one per sticky note. Sort into general and specific rules. Identify 3 – 5 that you (as an individual) believe are the most important. Justify to a partner why these rules are the right ones for your classroom.

5 Teaching Rules and Behaviors What does ________ look like in action? (Respect, Listening, Being prepared for learning, etc…) Positive ActionsNegative ActionsAlmost But Not Quite How will you teach the rules to your students?
