1 Winter Interim in Mexico 2010-2011 Modern Language 376 Dr. Terry Mannetter Trip overview

2 Class components  Orientation meeting in September  Students and leaders meet for 8 seminars during Fall, to study Mesoamerican culture and society  Classes include logistics: safety, vaccinations, passports, transportation.

3 Class requirements  Students write 1 page topic report before leaving for Mexico  Students keep critical incident journal during tour  Final paper (8-10 pages) addressing cultural issues discovered during trip is due in mid February.

4 Final spring meeting  Students gather at last trip meeting to turn in final paper and to swap photos and stories with classmates

5 Study Tour Itinerary  December 29, 2010 - January 19, 2011  Students see Mexican Christmas Celebration, Three Kings Day, and New Years Eve.

7 Itinerary…  Mexico City, largest city in the world with some 28 million residents: Ballet Folclórico, Zócalo, Diego Rivera murals, Anthropology Museum, Frida Kahlo House, archaeological ruins, pyramids at Teotihuacán, etc.

22 Estimated Costs  Total cost is estimated at $2,300, subject to change.  This includes trip fees, airline ticket, hotels, local transportation, entrance fees to museums, etc., and insurance.  This does not include 3 credits tuition, food, or souvenirs. Global Connections also charges a $275 course administraton fee to all study abroad students.

24 Application procedure  Junior/Senior standing has preference  2.5 GPA required  Fill out and turn in application at fall organizational meeting  Pay $250 trip fee (deposit) to Cashier’s Office beginning week of September 14-18, 2010  Use financial aid for J-term as in fall/spring semester  Class counts for Global Perspectives (G) credit, credit toward a Spanish major, and numerous minors  Possible scholarships for WI students

25 Fall meeting dates (Tuesdays)  September 28 overview, documents, background reading.  October 5 history and culture of Mexico Pre- Columbian, Colonial, Modern. Major political and social events in Mexico during the 19th-21st centuries.  October 19 survival Spanish, culture shock awareness.  October 26 agriculture and geography of Mexico with examples of principal crops and animal production, economy of Mexico and NAFTA. Gregg Hadley from Ag Sci Dept.  November 9 health and safety, eating and drinking in Mexico. Guest speaker from Department of Health Services.  November 16Mexican art and architecture.  November 30US/Mexico international business. Video: Vincent Lencioni from Connell & Associates, Mexico City.  December 7 Final preparations for air travel, student documents, safety and common sense issues during the study tour in Mexico.
