1 Luke 2:41-52 Jesus Grows Up

2 “‎And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.
Luke 2:40 “‎And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon Him.

3 “The eye which comprehends heaven and earth within
its range of vision, does not, by taking itself to darkness or closing its lid, deprive itself of its power of sight, but merely resigns its far-reaching activity;

4 …so does the Son of God close
His all-seeing eye, and take Himself to human darkness on earth, and then as a child of man open His eye on earth, and as the Light of the world, gradually increasing in brilliancy till it shines at the right hand of the Father, in perfect splendor.” Sartorius

5 “Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the
Luke 2:41 “Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.” ‎

6 Exodus 23:14-17 “Each year you must celebrate three festivals in my honor. ‎ First, celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. (Passover). For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you.

7 for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt.
Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. No one may appear before Me without an offering. ‎

8 Festival of the Final Harvest
“Second, celebrate the Festival of Harvest, when you bring Me the first crops of your harvest. “Finally, celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvest at the end of the harvest season, when you have harvested all the crops from your fields. ‎ One more slide in this passage.

9 “At these three times each year, every man in Israel
must appear before the Sovereign, the LORD.”

10 Luke 2:42 “And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to custom,”

11 His parents did not know it,
Luke 2:43-45 “And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing Him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, (1 day=20 miles).‎

12 …but then they began to search for Him among their relatives and acquaintances, ‎and when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, (1 day=20 miles) searching for Him.”

13 “After three days they found Him
Luke 2:46-47 “After three days they found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.”

14 “According to the Jewish idiom, this would be equivalent to
“on the third day.” The days are easily accounted for: at the close of the 1st day Jesus was missed; 2nd day would be occupied with searching for Him on the way back to Jerusalem; on the 3rd they found Him in the Temple” J. Willcock

15 “And when His parents saw Him, they were astonished.
Luke 2:48-50 “And when His parents saw Him, they were astonished. And His mother said to Him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” ‎

16 “Why were you looking for me?
“And He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in My Father’s house?” And they did not understand the saying that He spoke to them.”

17 Jesus by implication draws attention to this fact in His reply.
“Thy father and I— “The use of this phrase is natural enough; but it is really inconsistent with the facts of the case. Jesus by implication draws attention to this fact in His reply.

18 that justified His being where
“He knew and felt that there was something in Him and in His previous history, which ought to be known to Mary and Joseph, that justified His being where He was, and forbade their anxiety about Him” Schaff and Willcock

19 “And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and
Luke 2:51-52 “And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And His mother treasured up all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.”

20 “The Boy Jesus grew up in
a large family, in a despised city, nurtured by parents who were probably poor. The Jewish religion was at an all-time low, the Roman government was in control, and society was in a state of fear and change.

21 Yet when Jesus emerged from Nazareth, eighteen years later,
the Father was able to say of Him, “Thou art My beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased” Luke 3:22 Warren W. Wiersbe

22 "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing! Forever and ever, Amen.”
