2. Background Liberia was founded by ex-slaves from the U.S. who wanted to create a free country to live in. From 1824 to 1864, 19,000 black Americans congregated in Liberia. In 1980, Samuel Doe seized power of Liberia in a bloody battle.

3. What caused the Civil War?  Disagreements and power struggles between various social, political and religious factions have been torn the nation apart.  Charles Taylor, a former lieutenant of doe, invaded Liberia from the neighboring Ivory Coast.  Taylor wanted to take over Doe’s regime.

4. Doe vs. Taylor Doe Seized power of Liberia in 1980 Killed many people while taking over the country. Taylor Tried to take control of Liberia from Doe. Was elected President of Liberia in 1997.
