1 ------------- Image1 ------------- Field Data Image Number JRL061272cb Reference Number UPC/2/203 Image Title Whitworth Hall Date Created c.1901-1908 Description Black and white photograph of the exterior of the Whitworth Hall. Taken at ground level from the eastern side of Oxford Rd near to the junction with Dover St, the shot is angled NW towards the corner of Oxford Rd and Burlington St. It shows the still new Whitworth Hall. In the foreground on the site formerly occupied by the Students' Union and currently by the Refectory are a number of advertisements and posters for a diverse range of events and products. Tram tracks with cables suspended above them are visible along Oxford Road. In the distance a horse drawn buggy can be seen traveling towards the photographer. The photograph is clearly taken before 1912, as the extension to the Manchester Museum completed in that year is not visible. The old Dental Hospital (now part of the Museum) can be made out in the distance. Taken at ground level from the eastern side of Oxford Rd near to the junction with Dover St, the shot is angled NW towards the corner of Lime Grove and Oxford Rd. The rather forbidding- looking Edwardian building can be seen surrounded by a low brick wall which enclosed a shallow area where a number of fairly large trees were planted, their foliage obscuring much of the eastern face of the structure. Next door, iron railings cross the eastern entrance onto Lime Grove with a gate providing access to a car park lying just to the south of the union building, in which a number of cars and scooters are visible. On the wire mesh gates can be seen a sign which reads "Danger explosive operations in progress keep out". To the north of this, standing on the site now occupied by the Weston centre, is Leonard Fairclough Ltd and across the Medlock (which has since been culverted at this point and runs beneath the campus) are several large industrial mills and factories on the plot where the George Begg building now stands.
