“The Rich Young Ruler”
2
16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" 17 So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. “But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."
3
Mark 10:17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him. Luke 18:18 A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
4
“What additional good deeds must I be doing over and above all those very many that I have already done, for ‘from my youth’ I have observed God’s law?” Dr. Hendriksen He thought of goodness as quantitative (a series of acts) and not qualitative (of the nature of God). Robertson’s Word Pictures
5
Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
6
The L ORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
7
“You know the commandments…”
8
And the L ORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the L ORD your God am holy.

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill...” “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
12
18 He said to Him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,' 19 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" 20 The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?"
13
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the L ORD your God gives you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
14
You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the L ORD.
15
21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
16
“perfect” can be translated “mature” or “full-grown.” Matt 5:48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
17
Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
18
Deut. 6:4-5 “Hear, O Israel! The L ORD is our God, the L ORD is one! You shall love the L ORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” John 3:1-6, Ezekiel 36:25-27
19
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
20
This challenge exposed the barrier that could keep this young man out of the kingdom: his love of money. Ironically, his attitude made him unable to keep the first commandment, one that Jesus did not quote: “You shall have no other gods before me”. The young man did not love God with his whole heart as he had presumed. In reality, his many possessions were his god, his idol. If he could not give these up, he would be violating the first and greatest commandment. Life application Bible commentary
21
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
22
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
23
Mark 10:22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property. Luke 18:23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
24
“Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.”
