Reflection and Refraction

The Law of Reflection – incident rays and reflected rays make equal angles with a line perpendicular to the surface called the normal. Angle of Incidence = Angle of Reflection

Reflection and Refraction Virtual Image – The apparent location of an object due to the reflected lights rays from a mirror. You see the image on the mirror, but its actually just being reflected from another place

Reflection and Refraction When light is incident on a rough surface, it is reflected in many directions. This is diffuse reflection. The many different angles the incident ray encounters causes the light to be scattered in many different directions after hitting the mirror. Mirrors are all smooth, so the reflective light is streamlined.

Reflection and Refraction Interesting fact: sound can be refracted when the temperature is uneven in the atmosphere. This will happen at night. Sound will travel within cool air, bouncing off warm air, so it is easier to hear far away distances at night.

Mirages are caused by the index of refraction in air changing because of the temperature. The road, reflecting the heat of the sun, is hotter than the air surrounding it. This causes a differential change in n, and a reflection of the sky is projected from the road. It appears as a puddle of water, but it’s a image of the sky on the road.

Reflection and Refraction Dispersion is the separation of light into a spectrum by refraction. The index of refraction for each wavelength of color is different. The larger the wavelength, the less the light is bent. Rainbows are formed from sunlight being dispersed by water (rain)
