2 Thomas: (Footsteps approaching) Hi, Mark! Hi, Mary! Hey, you both look really tired. Are you OK? Mark: Yeah, I’m fab, had the best night ever! Mary: Yeah, you’ll never believe what happened to us last night. Mark: It was amazing, there were earthquakes and all sorts. Thomas: What? Earthquakes, here, in Philippi? Pull the other one. Mary: It’s true, there really was. Mark: At the prison where our dad works. Thomas: Wasn’t that where they took those two blokes from the market square yesterday? I heard they were flogged and locked up in chains. Mary: Yes, poor Paul and Silas. Thomas: (Teasing.) Ooh, poor Pauly and Silasy, sounds like you’re best mates now. Mark: Well, we are. Thomas: What!! You are friends with prisoners! I thought your Dad was supposed to keep criminals locked up in chains, not make friends with them. Mary: Yes, but Paul and Silas aren’t criminals. They were locked up by the Jewish leaders, even though they had done nothing wrong.

3 Thomas: Cor, I bet they were cross about that. Mark: Well, that was one of the amazing things. You would think they would be banging and shouting but instead they sang and prayed to their God. Mary: Our God. Mark: Oh yes, our God. Our friend Jesus. Thomas: What, don’t tell me you believe all that rubbish they were spouting. Mary: Oh yes, cos at midnight, while they were singing and praying, there was a dreadful earthquake. Mark: And the walls of the prison started shaking and the doors flew open, and all the chains of the prisoners fell off. Mary: Our dad was so terrified he was trembling, cos he thought he would be in trouble for letting the prisoners escape. He grabbed a light and went to see what had happened. Mark: Yeah, he even drew his sword to kill himself. Thomas: Or kill a few of the prisoners for escaping. Mary: No, because none of them did. When Dad arrived they were all still sitting there with Paul and Silas. Mark: Dad couldn’t believe it, so he asked them why. Paul and Silas told him all about how Jesus had made us right with God again and how he was with them and looking after them.

4 Thomas: What? So even though they were in a stinking prison when they shouldn’t have been, they didn’t run away when they got the chance! Mary: No, so our dad invited them for a meal. Mark: And he even washed all their wounds himself. Mary: And cos of all the noise, even though it was the middle of the night, we were up, so he told us about Jesus too. Mark: And we all decided that we wanted to be friends of Jesus too, and so Paul baptised us with water. Thomas: Cor, no wonder you look so tired. Mary: I might look tired but I don’t feel it. I’m so full of joy, I could burst. Thomas: Come on, let’s go to my house and you can tell me all about this Jesus bloke! (Footsteps fading away.)
