1 Tips and Tricks for the Managing The Daily 5 In your classroom!

2 In the Beginning… Start out small. Introduce one component of the Daily 5 per week. Model, Model, Model! Be sure to model how your students are to “look” in the component, don’t forget to model how they are not to “look”. Always be sure to end with the “proper” model. Depending on the grade level, start off with very small increments of time in each component, to ensure that everyone is successful, and gradually increase the length of time.

3 Launching Read to Self Make an “I” chart with the class outlining what the students should be doing the entire read to self time, and what the teacher will be doing. Allow students to practice behavior every day for a week for a minimum amount of time. Increase time by a few minutes each week. 4 Helping Students Pick Good Fit Books Introduce students to the “I Pick” chart. I look at a book P urpose I nterest C omprehend K now all the words

5 Launching Read to Someone Teach students to sit “EEK” Teach students how to pick or accept a partner. Teach students how to compromise when choosing a book. Remind students the importance of reading the whole time.

Feature student recordings. Allow students to share their responses to the stories. 10 You Are Ready to Roll… When you have introduced all elements of the Daily 5. Students are ready to begin the daily rotation through all activities. Be sure to allow the students the control of choosing which books to read, which writing to conduct, and which station to participate in first.
