BY: LISA SIDOROV AND DANNIE LAMCHEK CHEMISTRY PERIOD 1 MRS.WENK DATE LAB PERFORMED: MAY 24,2013 DATE TURNED IN: JUNE 4,2013 RUTGERS LEEDAR EVERYDAY CHEMISTRY LAB PROJECT 2013: HAIR DYE

INTRODUCTION Do homemade treatments help prevent hair from being damaged by the chemicals in hair dye? In our experiment we are using permanent and temporary hair dye. Temporary dyes cover the surface of the hair but do not penetrate into the hair shaft. They generally last for 1 to 2 washings. Permanent dyes cause lasting chemical changes in the hair shaft. They are the most popular types of hair dyes, because the color changes last until the hair is replaced by new growth. They are sometimes referred to as coal-tar dyes because of some of the ingredients they contain. Permanent dyes contain various colorless substances such as aromatic amines and phenols. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, these substances go through a chemical reaction to become a dye. Darker hair dyes tend to use higher concentrations of coloring agents. About 75% of women in America have at one point or another in their life dyed their hair. The natural composition of green tea and parsley help to keep the hair from being damaged while being dyed.

HYPOTHESIS Homemade treatments help prevent hair from being damaged by the chemicals in hair dye because the natural enzymes help keep the hair strong and not break or split from chemicals.

HOW WILL I TEST MY QUESTION? MATERIALS 1.8 Sections of Blonde hair extensions (real human hair) 2.Hair dye kits 1.Brown 2.Brown temporary 3.Red 4.Red temporary 3.Microscope 4.Bag/something to cover the surface you are using 5.Green tea 6.Parsley 7.Cup 8.Pan

HOW WILL I TEST MY QUESTION? PROCEDURE 1.Divide the eight hair sections on a garbage bag or on a surface you are not afraid to harm, as hair dye will stain a surface. 2.Color two of the hair sections with brown hair dye, following all instructions in the box. Color another two of the hair sections with the temporary brown hair dye, following all instruction in the box. Repeat the same process for the red hair dye. 3.Take one hair section from each color and set aside, these are your controls for the experiment. 4.Brew the green tea in the cup according to the instructions on the box 5.Boil the parsley in hot water for 5-6 min 6.Take both brown sections of hair(one permanent and one temporary) and cover them both in green tea. 7.Take both red sections of hair(one permanent and one temporary) and cover them both in the parsley. 8.Set aside all the sections of hair. 9.Every other day for a week wash hair as directed with shampoo and conditioner. Using the same shampoo for each section of hair and the conditioner provided in the box with the hair dye. 10.Observe the hair everyday under a microscope as well as texture and color. Record your observations. What to look for: Split ends How fast the color fades The texture of the hair Breaks in the hair (under microscope) Data Color observations Split ends (yes/no) Texture (dry/hard/soft) Hair Quality (under microscope)

DATA: (DAY 4, FINAL SHAMPOOING AND CONDITIONING) Hair ColorColor ObservationsSplit Ends (yes/no) TextureHair Quality (Under microscope) BrownColor has faded but still retains its vibrancy. Not as dark as before but the color is still there. yesDry and knotted Breaks in hair, it is dry and we can clearly see the split ends Brown+Green TeaColor has faded significantly and has started reverting to the original blondness of the hair extensions. noNot as soft as before but still soft Slight breaks, not too noticeable Brown TemporaryColor has faded, some blonde is starting to show but not a lot. It is not as vibrant as before. yesDry yet still soft Breaks in hair, it does not have as many split ends Brown Temporary + Green Tea Color has faded, it is more of a dirty blonde now and not as vibrant as before. noStill pretty soft Almost no breaks RedColor has faded but still retains its vibrancy. It is still red, yet it has faded out some, but the vibrancy is still there. yesDry, not as soft as before Breaks in hair, the split ends are well defined Red + ParsleyColor has faded significantly, and looks more of a strawberry blonde now. noPretty softSlight breaks, just a few that are well noticeable but not too many Red TemporaryColor has faded, it is not completely red, more orangey now, and not as vibrant as before. yesDry yet still soft Breaks in hair, just a few split ends not many Red Temporary + ParsleyColor is almost gone, it is a very faint strawberry blonde and almost all the vibrancy is gone. noSoft but not as soft as before Almost no breaks in hair

DISCUSSION What is the meaning of your results? The hair that was treated with the home remedies ended up being healthier even if the color faded more quickly. What are the conclusions of your experiment? Natural home treatment contain ingredients that protect the hair from the chemicals in the hair dye. Did you answer your question? Yes Was your hypothesis correct? Yes

DISCUSSION: ERRORS Errors: One error is that using extensions does not have the same effect as using regular hair. In regular hair that grows from our head, we get natural enzymes released daily. The extensions, while made of human hair, lack the enzymes which affect the results. Another error is not knowing the age of the hair since it has been cut. The longer it has been cut, the less enzymes it has remaining. Lastly not having the hair in a controlled temperature affects it as well. Hair in warm and sunny climates gets lighter and oilier. Hair in cold and dark climates gets darker and more brittle.

ERRORS CONTINUED What would you do differently next time? We would have a controlled temperature environment and people to volunteer to have their hair used so as to have the natural enzymes. What follow up experiments would you do? We would follow up with an experiment that involves the effects of excessive hair dying with the home treatments. As well as re-dying previously dyed hair and retreating it.
