2 Imperialism As European countries industrialized they needed more resources to fuel their production. They looked to other countries to take their material. What is imperialism??? British began economic interest in India in 1600’s. In 1757 as small kingdoms fought for the throne after the Mughal collapse Robert Clive lead East India troops over the Indian and French at the Battle of Plassey. For next 100 years East India Co. was the leading power in India, not the British government.

3 British Control over India East India Co. was officially regulated by GB but rarely interfered with. East India Co. even had their own army staffed by sepoys – Indian soldier. India considered the “jewel of the crown”. LL What does it mean to be the jewel of the crown and why was it deemed that? India major supplier of raw material during industrial revolution, and population of over 300 million huge market for British goods. British control ruined India's production of items due to cheap mass produced British materials. RR became increasingly valuable to the British. Both for production and for improving economic life in India and enabling it to become a stable and modern country. Not all was well. British restrictions on crop growing caused many of the famines in the late 1800’s.

5 Sepoy Mutiny Indians resented British control and push to convert to Christianity 1857 Sepoys given new rifles with cartridges greased with beef and pork fat that the Sepoys would need to bite off to load their Enfield rifles. Why is this an issue? Think about who the Sepoys were. Hindus considered the cow sacred and Muslims did not eat pork; were all outraged. 85 of 90 soldiers jailed for disobeying/refusing to accept the cartridges. The next day on may 10, the sepoys rebelled. Marched to Delhi captured the city and from there moved to northern and central India. Sepoy Mutiny the uprising spread over much of northern India. 1 year of fighting took place, problems with sepoys ability to win was refusal of Muslims and Hindus to unite to fight. Sikhs stayed loyal to British and became their army in India. Due to the mutiny. British gov’t took control of India, fueled racial attitudes of the British. Most important nationalism movement expanded in India. What is nationalism? Tired of feeling like second class citizens in their own country.
