3 verse 1 The LORD said to Samuel: “How long will you mourn for Saul since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Consider this...

4 Question One Are we aware that in each succeeding generation God is doing a new thing?

5 Question Two Are we guilty, like Samuel of clinging to the past?

6 verse 1 Fill your horn and be on your way. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem I have chosen one of his sons to be king. Consider this

7 Question Three How do we respond when we see God choosing a new generation of leaders?

8 Question Four Do we recognise the need for anointed service: spiritually appointed and endorsed servants of the LORD?

9 verse 2 But Samuel said, “ How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me.” Consider this

10 Question Five Are we more afraid of the powers of this world than we are of the LORD?

11 verse 2/3 The Lord said: “Take... Say... Invite... Anoint... I will show you...” Consider this

12 Question Six When God speaks do we obey?

13 Question Seven Do we hear/recognise the precise voice/word of God?

14 verse 4 Samuel did what the LORD said. Consider this

15 verse 4/5 When he arrived at Bethlehem.... Consider this

16 Question Eight What preparation did we make before coming here to worship the LORD this morning?

17 verse 6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought: Surely the LORD’s Anointed stands before the LORD. But the LORD said.... “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.” Consider this

18 Question Nine Do we look for people to undertake the LORD’s work who remind us of those who have gone before? Are we rooted in the patterns of the past?

19 verse 7 “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at.” Consider this

21 Question Ten What does this mean for you as an individual?

22 Question Eleven What does this mean for you as Pendlebury Church?

23 verse 7 “Man looks at the outward appearance but the LORD looks at the heart.” Consider this

24 verse 8 Then Jesse called Ab, Sham,...the 7. “The LORD has not chosen these.” Consider this

25 Question Twelve Have we experienced this: a sense of the scent gone cold; God’s guidance leading to an apparent contradiction? Where to now?

26 Question Thirteen How do we respond when the guidance goes cold?

27 verse 11 So he asked Jesse, “ Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest but he is tending the sheep.” Consider this

28 Question Fourteen Are we looking for someone to pick up the baton... and this someone doesn’t appear to be on the scene? Are we judging as Man judges? Has God chosen the last person that you would have given the job to?

29 verse 11 “Send for him. We will not sit down/gather round until he arrives.” Consider this

30 verse 12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy with a fine appearance and handsome features. Consider this

31 verse 12 Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him. He is the one.” Consider this

32 verse 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers. Consider this

33 verse 12 And from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Consider this

34 Question Fifteen Do we come into contact with people whose lives are clearly empowered by the Spirit of God? Have we stopped expecting to?

35 verse 13 Samuel then went to Ramah. JOB DONE

36 David becomes king. God approves & promises 2 Samuel 7:8ff, 11/16 Who am I? How great You are! Do as you promised: then men will say

37 David’s posterity anticipated. God approves & promises Jeremiah 23:5/6 the Righteous Branch

38 God’s promise fulfilled Luke 1:30/33 The LORD will give him the Throne of his father David. Psalm 110/Matthew 22:41ff

39 God’s provision preached Acts 2:29/36...one of his descendants on the throne... Lord and Christ Psalm 110/Matthew 22:41ff

40 The glorified Lamb of God Revelation 5:2 The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David has triumphed Psalm 110/Matthew 22:41ff

41 The final curtain falls Revelation 22 I Jesus have sent you this message by my angel. I am the Root and Offspring of David the Bright and Morning Star
