2 Writing Warm-up  Think of a vivid memory involving your family. First create a brief sketch of this memory in your journal. NEXT write a short paragraph about the memory. Use your sketch for inspiration….try and make the reader see what you saw and feel what you felt!

3 Lyric Poetry  Today we will be reading lyric poems. What are some details you know about lyric poetry?

4 Diction  Why is word choice particularly important in poetry?

5 Imagery  What is imagery?  Why is it important in poetry?

7 My Papa’s Waltz  Complete the first reading by yourself…write down on your worksheet what you think the poem means.

8 My Papas Waltz  Read the poem again, this time with a partner. Write down what you think the poem means.

9 My Papas Waltz  Read through the poem again. Highlight words that have a positive connotation and underline the word with a negative connotation.  List the words on your worksheet.

10 My Papa’s Waltz  Based on your analysis of both positive and negative connotations, what is the tone of this poem?

11 My Papa’s Waltz  Read through the poem again and star all the instances of imagery. Write down two examples of this imagery.

12 My Papa’s Waltz  How does this imagery impact the meaning and the tone of this poem?

13 Closing Activity  Go back to your journal entry. At the bottom of your entry list all the positive/negative words in your entry (make a T chart like on your worksheet). Also, underline all examples of imagery. Do you think you could improve your writing? Why/ why not?

14 Warm-up  Revisit your writing from last class ( a vivid memory with your family or friends).  Rewrite your journal entry….this time focus on adding imagery and choosing words that help make your message more clear to your reader!

15 Paraphrase  What does is mean to paraphrase? Why is this an important skill?

16 Elegy  What does Elegy mean?  Quick Write: Today we will be reading an elegy. Based on this information, what can you infer about the tone and mood of the poem? Why can you make these inferences?

17 Elegy for the Giant Tortoises  Read the poem through by yourself. After reading paraphrase the author’s words. You should write a sentence paraphrasing each stanza.

18 Share your paraphrase…  Share your paraphrase with those around you. Check to see if you drew the same meaning from the poem.

19 Your Turn….  Write an elegy for something you have lost in your life. It does not have to be for a person, you may write an elegy for the summer, for sleeping in, etc. It should be at least twenty lines, but you can choose how many stanzas.
