3 ENGLISH BACCALAUREATE (The Department for Education) Students attaining GCSE grades 9 to 5 in a specified group of subjects will be awarded the English Baccalaureate Certificate. The specified subjects are as follows: English Mathematics A language (classical or modern) Sciences (at least 2) A humanity (either History or Geography)

4 THE CORE All students will study the following subjects to GCSE: ENGLISH (LANGUAGE & LITERATURE) MATHEMATICS SCIENCE (TRIPLE) A LANGUAGE (FRENCH, GERMAN OR LATIN) A HUMANITY (GEOGRAPHY OR HISTORY) 8 GCSE SUBJECTS IN THE CORE PLUS CORE P.E. AND CORE R.S.

7 HOW TO CHOOSE Language Section: Choose French OR German OR Latin Humanities Section: Choose Geography OR History Other Options Section: Rank your top four choices – 1 for top choice, 2 for second most preferred etc. We will do our best to ensure ALL Girls get their top choice. The vast majority should get their second. In the event of an impasse the final decision will be reached by lot.

9 NEW GCSEs This year there will be new GCSEs in all subjects except Classical Civilisation and possibly Religious Studies. These two GCSEs will be graded 1-9, not A*-G A Grade 9 will awarded to the top 20% of pupils achieving a 7 or above. This means there will be far fewer Grade 9s than the current A* in most subjects. A good pass is now considered to be a Grade 5.

10 THE NEW GCSE GRADING SYSTEM

11 WCHS Sixth Form Entry Criteria: Minimum entry requirements All applicants are likely to need a minimum average capped GCSE point score of 6. This is the average points score of the best 8 GCSEs (Grade 9=9 points etc). Applicants wishing to study A level Mathematics need to have GCSE grade 7 or above in Mathematics. Applicants wishing to study A Level Further Mathematics will need to have Grade 8 or 9 in Mathematics. Applicants wishing to study A levels in either Biology, Chemistry and Physics must have studied Triple Science for GCSE and achieved GCSE grades 7,7,6 or above.

12 Good Criteria What am I good at? What do I enjoy? What do I need? Poor Criteria Do I like the teacher? Are my friends doing it? Does somebody else think it’s a good idea? What To Do Read the information in the booklet. Girls should talk to their subject teachers and form tutor. Discuss it as a family. Ask other experts on the staff – eg Ms Fearnhamm, Mr Donohue, myself… MAKING THE DECISION
