Influences on the Revolution and our Nation’s Government.

Influences on the Revolution and our Nation’s Government Mayflower Compact Fundamental Orders Great Awakening and Enlightenment House of Burgesses Salutary Neglect Zenger Trial English Bill of Rights Magna Carta

Different levels of thinking Level 1: What is it? Level 2: Why is it important? Level 3: How does it impact or influence ? The connection!

Mayflower Compact 1.A document created by the Pilgrims after they landed in Massachusetts. 2.Created the first self-government in the Americas where none had existed. 3.Demonstrated to the colonies that they were able to establish government and survive without England’s assistance.

Mayflower Compact

Fundamental Orders Level 1: Men in Connecticut from three townships established a constitution for their region. Level 2: It was the first written constitution (written plan of government) in the Americas. Level 3: Today we have The Constitution which runs our government. It has the written laws of our nation. It has the same basic aspects (including a Preamble)

Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

The Great Awakening and the Enlightenment 1.Time of unity and individual thought. 2.Created a feeling of togetherness and pushed for people to act for themselves in the colonies. 3.Ideas like Locke’s natural rights of man influenced colonists to think for themselves and to challenge England rule, and Franklin’s ideas brought the concept of a united grouping of colonies (Albany Plan of Union).

The Great Awakening and the Enlightenment

House of Burgesses 1.Colonial Assembly in Virginia that allowed for representative government. Burgesses means representative. 2.It was the first representative government in the colonies that allowed people to have a say through voting. 3.Impacted the colonists by getting them to feel that their say was important in government and that their voices should be heard. We use this idea today in our Senate and House of Representatives.

The House of Burgesses

Salutary Neglect 1.England’s hand’s off policy towards the colonies due to the distance apart (the Atlantic Ocean). 2.The colonies learned to rely on themselves and they became more independent. 3.The colonies will feel that they did not need Mother England telling them what to do. Created tension when England will try to regain influence.

Zenger Trial 1.Trial of John Peter Zenger who criticized the governor of New York and was put on trial. 2.This case resulted in the right of freedom of the press if you are speaking the truth. 3.This will influence the colonies to challenge England and the act/laws that they feel are not fair. This will also be key to the First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and press.

The Zenger Trial

The Glorious Revolution- 1688 Occurred because King James II tried to make the Roman Catholic religion the only religion in England. The King tried to control and influence Parliament to support his Catholic Crusade. The revolted and The English Bill of Rights was established

English Bill of Rights- 1689 1.Document signed by King William and Queen Mary that respected the rights of English citizens and of Parliament as a result of the Glorious Revolution. 2.It was agreement signed by the King that will give the citizens and Parliament of fundamental rights like free elections and will limit the Kings powers (no taxes or laws by the King without Parliaments approval). 3.As British colonists begin to challenge England, they feel their rights are being abused and the King is over stepping his power. This leads to rebellion. We will end up using many of these ideas to form our own Bill of Rights for the Constitution.

English Bill of Rights continued Parliament- law making body of English government. Consisted of House of Lord and House of Commons. This compares to our Legislative Branch (Congress). We have the House of Representatives and Senate. The main job of this branch is to make laws.

English Bill of Rights

Problems that led to the Magna Carta King John had a conflict with the Church and the Pope banned religion from England for 5 years. He fought and lost 2 wars with France and lost much land in Europe that his father had obtained. He raised taxes to pay for the costs of the wars. RESULT- people are fed up!!!!

Magna Carta

1.The “Great Charter” established in England in 1215 that guaranteed basic political rights to the people. 2.This charter was the first to put limits on the power of the King and gave protection to the people. 3.Began the idea that the people had power and that their rights were to be protected for all British citizens including the colonists. When the King abuses his power they will refer back to this document to justify their actions.

Agenda- October 10, 2013 Acrostic Poem- Reading for E.C. Study Guide- Questions? HW Reminder- Study tonight and finish HW Packet QUIZDOM
