E-mail: iovbdcd@gmail.comiovbdcd@gmail.com Surat is endemic for dengue fever (DF) and DHF as the most important viral disease rapidly spread by mosquito. Surat has the ideal environment for propagation of Aedes aegypti and arbovirus transmission and frequent cases of dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection have been reported in this region. This study is retrospectively analysis of diseases burden and impact assessment of dengue and chikungunya in urban areas of Surat City. Dengue and Chikungunya infection is the most prevalent arthropod-borne viral infection and continues to present serious public health problems in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. All four dengue virus sero-types are isolated from major out breaks in different parts of India. Dengue stands as one of the major public health problem. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has already established a comprehensive system to combat the problem of dengue and chikungunya. Additionally, passive surveillance activities were carried out by 39 Urban Health Centre (UHC) in conjunction with two major hospital working. SMC has well designed network built up between public and private agencies about 120 private hospitals are actively involved in screening of dengue cases by providing laboratory facilities, preparing a format to collect detail information about suspected dengue case and death cases. During the year January to October 2013 regularly, week basis intradomestic and peridomestic surveillance were carried out, in this direction, usual 389897 vulnerable house hold were visited and 849976 wet container inspected out of that 2554 breeding spots positive for larvae. Predominant proportion indicates 341 (52.51%) for aedes, 960 (37.59%) for anopheles, 15 (0.59%) for culex and 238 (9.32%) spots were found positive for mix. Along with these activities on source reduction campaigns and administrative expenditure charges 67.80 lakhs were recovered from defaulters who creating the mosquitogenic condition in their own premises. Base line data of dengue cases in 2009 of Surat city as compared to 2013 were indicated that seropositivity rate was 75.34 percent (48.62% to 11.99%) reduction observed; while sero surveillance activities were raised 192% (977 to 1876) strengthen by participation of Private hospitals. Numbers of dengue cases were also declined 47.37 percent (475 to 225) in the year 2013 as compared 2009. Risk map of Ae. aegypti DENV suggest that western parts of Surat city have more risk of DENV infection. Control of dengue and chikungunya is the only source of community's awareness. Study highlights that once virus circulation established in the dense community, minimal indices can be spread the Dengue and DHF outbreak. Corrective implementation of BPMC Acts for vector control measures, appropriate IEC in school children may control the DF & DHF outbreak. A total of 556 pools of Aedes aegypti were collected from various places of Surat city and were processed in laboratory for detection of CHIKV and DENV using IFA and RT-PCR. Phylogenetic trees of CHIKV and DENV serotypes were constructed respectively. Based on GIS information risk map of Aedes aegypti and DENV infections were constructed. Most of the mosquitoes were negative for CHIKV and DENV by IFA. However, 13 pools were found positive for DENV and one pool was found positive for CHIKV respectively. All positive pools were reconfirmed by RT-PCR and DNA sequencing.
