Lesson 60 The Sixth Petition “Lead Us Not into Temptation”

Ephesians 2:1–3 (NCV) In the past you were spiritually dead because of your sins and the things you did against God. 2 Yes, in the past you lived the way the world lives, following the ruler of the evil powers that are above the earth. That same spirit is now working in those who refuse to obey God. 3 In the past all of us lived like them, trying to please our sinful selves and doing all the things our bodies and minds wanted. We should have suffered God’s anger because we were sinful by nature. We were the same as all other people. THE DEVIL James 1:13 (NCV) When people are tempted, they should not say, “God is tempting me.” Evil cannot tempt God, and God himself does not tempt anyone. GOD NEVER TEMPTS PEOPLE TO SIN

THE DEVIL GOD NEVER TEMPTS PEOPLE TO SIN Genesis 3:1–6 (NCV) Now the snake was the most clever of all the wild animals the L ORD God had made. One day the snake said to the woman, “Did God really say that you must not eat fruit from any tree in the garden?” 2 The woman answered the snake, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. 3 But God told us, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must not even touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 But the snake said to the woman, “You will not die. 5 God knows that if you eat the fruit from that tree, you will learn about good and evil and you will be like God!” 6 The woman saw that the tree was beautiful, that its fruit was good to eat, and that it would make her wise. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of the fruit to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. A LIE TO TRY TO MAKE US DOUBT GOD

THE DEVIL GOD NEVER TEMPTS PEOPLE TO SIN A LIE TO TRY TO MAKE US DOUBT GOD Matthew 27:3–5 (NCV) 3 Judas, the one who had given Jesus to his enemies, saw that they had decided to kill Jesus. Then he was very sorry for what he had done. So he took the thirty silver coins back to the priests and the leaders, 4 saying, “I sinned; I handed over to you an innocent man.” The leaders answered, “What is that to us? That’s your problem, not ours.” 5 So Judas threw the money into the Temple. Then he went off and hanged himself.... TO LEAD US TO DISPAIR

THE DEVIL GOD NEVER TEMPTS PEOPLE TO SIN A LIE TO TRY TO MAKE US DOUBT GOD... TO LEAD US TO DISPAIR 1 Timothy 6:9–10 (NCV) 9 Those who want to become rich bring temptation to themselves and are caught in a trap. They want many foolish and harmful things that ruin and destroy people. 10 The love of money causes all kinds of evil. Some people have left the faith, because they wanted to get more money, but they have caused themselves much sorrow.... TO LEAD US INTO SIN, AWAY FROM GOD, AND HURT US

TO KEEP TEMPTATION AWAY 1 Corinthians 10:12–13 (NCV) 12 If you think you are strong, you should be careful not to fall. 13 The only temptation that has come to you is that which everyone has. But you can trust God, who will not permit you to be tempted more than you can stand. But when you are tempted, he will also give you a way to escape so that you will be able to stand it. Hebrews 2:18 (NCV) 18 And now he can help those who are tempted, because he himself suffered and was tempted. TO STRENGTHEN US WHEN WE ARE TEMPTED

What did Jesus do when he was tempted? A/D For Jesus, resisting temptation was easy. Which statement is better: –“Because Jesus forgives, I don’t have to worry about being tempted. He’ll forgive me later.” –“Because Jesus resisted temptation, I know Jesus will help me when I’m tempted. He gives me power to overcome it.”
