2 Getting Started Things you need to organise and/or prepare for: Register for a UNE username and password o It is the official form of communication o You need it for the HDR Progress Report Familiarise yourself with Policies, Resources and Services Familiarise yourself with student responsibilities and acceptable standards of behaviour Prepare for Confirmation of Candidature (occurs at 6 month into thesis)

7 Intellectual Property The University does not assert ownership over IP created by students but will insist on assignment of the IP where required for on-going research or transfer of that IP. Students retain ownership of the copyright in their thesis. In the Beginning -Background IP may be attributed to either: Totally UNE/Supervisor Shared between Student and UNE Totally Student Collaborator? At the end the project IP may either be shared or totally the student’s.

8 IP – what do you need to do Up front: Identify Background IP and apportion ownership. Are there UNE IP issues ? –UNE Background IP confidential or commercial? –Project IP integral to on-going research and/or teaching? Are there third party / collaborator issues? –Has funding been provided under an agreement with IP clauses? –IS collaborator Background IP confidential or commercial? –Will the student be restricted in publishing? The student may need to sign a confidentiality or an assignment agreement. –Legal Office –Student must be offered independent legal advice –If the student does not accept these restrictions they must be offered an alternate project.

9 IP – what do you need to do continued... At intervals: Identify the new project IP Define it and apportion ownership Review protection and transfer options At the end: Review thesis for IP issues. –Exposure of confidential IP –Copyright or moral rights Publication –Authorship Comply with any third party IP requirements.

12 HDR Progress Reports Online – notified by Email; Every 6 months in July and January (only after confirmation); Assists you (if you require suspension or scholarship); Provides a mechanism to ensure that you are on track and if you require additional support; Obligation of Students & Supervisors; Part of Scholarship and Sponsor Conditions.

13 Scholarships Scholarships are available for both international and domestic students, funded by UNE, Government or external organisations. 14 Variations to Candidature Research Services manages all aspects of your candidature (not Student Services): Extensions/Suspensions – are not automatically approved and must comply with policies & guidelines; Changes of status i.e. part time to full time; Changes of Supervision (where supervisor may be on LSL or SSP).

15 Research Ethics Who needs it? – You might! Researchers undertaking research involving:  Animals  Humans require ethics approval prior to data collection. Legislative requirements govern activities. If you are unsure if you need ethics approval, contact Research Services Key point – you need ethical approval before you commence data collection!

16 Publishing/Developing a Track Record Why is it important to publish: Researchers’ professional responsibility is to disseminate knowledge and expertise Get known & recognised in a broader network of scholars (including research students) Contribute to the UNE research quantum, especially according to DEEWR criteria Career advancement & promotion Peer review by experts tests the real quality of research Increase likelihood of success in obtaining future research grant funding.

17 Completion of your Research Submission of Thesis Digital Thesis Submission, not paper copy. PDFa ready format preferred for thesis component. Multimedia files can also be submitted Journal Article Format – available for articles published throughout candidature.
