Writing Linear Equations

 Slope-Intercept Form- An equation written in the form y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.  Point-Slope Form- An equation written in the form y-y 1 =m(x-x 1 ), where m is the slope and (x 1,y 1 ) is a point on the line.

 If it is not already in it, get equation into y=mx+b form  M is the slope  If there is no x term in equation, m=0  B is the y-intercept  If there is no term in equation not multiplied by a variable, b=0

 Start out with y=mx+b  Substitute slope in for m  With the point (x,y) substitute in the values for x and y in the equation  Solve for b  Write equation in slope intercept form

 Either one can be used for the same problem  Based on preference  Use whichever one you are more comfortable with

 As a salesperson, Jeremy is paid a daily salary plus commission. When his sales are $1000, he makes $100. When his sales are $1400, he makes $120.  A) Write a linear equation to model this situation.  B) What is Jeremy’s salary and commission rate?  C) What would Jeremy make in a day if his sales were $2000?

 For each meeting of the TCU High School book club, $25 is taken from the activities account to buy snacks and materials. After their 6 th meeting, there will be $350 left in the activities account.  A) If no money is put back into the account, what equation can be used to show how much money is left in the activities account after having x number of meetings?  B) How much money was originally in the account?  C) After how many meetings will there be no money left in the activities account?

 Lines that are parallel have the same slope  Lines that are perpendicular have slopes that are opposite reciprocals
