2. PUNCTUATION Why is punctuation important? Punctuation is a reliable way of communicating meaning. In pairs or small groups list as many punctuation marks as you can think of. ATALNODI Pam fod atalnodi yn bwysig? Mae atalnodi’n ffordd ddibynadwy o gyfleu ystyr. Mewn parau neu mewn grwpiau rhestrwch yr holl wahanol atalnodau y gallwch feddwl amdanynt.

4. FULL STOP. ▪Marks the end of a sentence Example: Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. QUESTION MARK ? ▪Marks the end of a question Example: What is your name? ATALNOD LLAWN. Nodi diwedd brawddeg Enghraifft: Caerdydd yw prifddinas Cymru. MARC CWESTIWN ? Nodi diwedd cwestiwn Enghraifft: Beth yw dy enw di?

5. EXCLAMATION MARK ! Marks the end of a sentence which expresses: ▪Exclamation or command ▪Direct speech shouted or spoken loudly Example: Sit down! “SPEECH MARKS” ▪“ ” or ‘ ’ ▪Show the words someone has spoken Example: “She is very clever” said Gethin. EBYCHNOD ! Nodi diwedd brawddeg sy’n mynegi: Syndod neu orchymyn Sgwrs uniongyrchol sy’n cael ei gweiddi neu ei siarad yn uchel Enghraifft: Eistedd i lawr! “DYFYNODAU” “ ” neu ‘ ’ Dangos geiriau sy’n cael eu siarad Enghraifft: “Mae hi’n glyfar iawn”, meddai Gethin.

COMMA, ▪Separates the items of a list Example: We need paper, pens, rulers and rubbers. ▪Marks out less important parts of sentences Example: The house, which had a bright red door, was number 45 on the street. ▪Marks the introductory clause or adverbial in a sentence Examples: Unfortunately, the weather was horrible the whole time we were away. COMA, Gwahanu eitemau mewn rhestr Enghraifft: Rydym angen papurau, pensiliau, prennau mesur a rwberi. Nodi rhannau llai pwysig mewn brawddeg Enghraifft: 45 oedd rhif y tŷ, oedd a drws coch llachar, ar y stryd. Nodi’r cymal cyflwyniadol neu’r cymal adferfol mewn brawddeg Enghraifft: Yn anffodus, roedd y tywydd yn wael yr holl amser roeddem ni i ffwrdd.

COLON : ▪Used to introduce a list ▪Used to introduce a quotation or piece of direct speech ▪Used to separate a subtitle from a title ▪Used to separate two parts of a sentence where the first leads on to the second Example: Dafydd went to the shop and bought the following items: paper, scissors, pens and glue. SEMI COLON ; ▪Used to mark a break between two parts of a sentence. The separate parts can usually stand as sentences in their own right. Example: He worked really hard; he deserved a distinction. COLON : Cael ei ddefnyddio i gyflwyno rhestr Cael ei ddefnyddio i gyflwyno dyfyniad neu sgwrs uniongyrchol Cael ei ddefnyddio i wahanu isdeitl oddi wrth y teitl Cael ei ddefnyddio i wahanu dwy ran mewn brawddeg lle mae’r rhan gyntaf yn arwain i’r ail ran Enghraifft: Aeth Dafydd i’r siop i brynu’r eitemau canlynol: papur, siswrn, pensiliau a glud. HANNER COLON ; Cael ei ddefnyddio i nodi toriad rhwng dwy ran mewn brawddeg. Fel arfer gall y rhannau hyn fod yn frawddegau ar eu pen eu hunain. Enghraifft: Gweithiodd yn galed iawn; roedd yn haeddu gradd ragoriaeth.

8. ATALNODI PUNCTUATION A woman without her man is nothing. A woman, without her man, is nothing. A woman: without her, man is nothing. Gwraig heb ei gŵr nid yw ddim. Gwraig, heb ei gŵr, nid yw ddim. Gwraig: hebddi, nid yw gŵr yn ddim.
