2 Starter for 5! 1. What is baptism? the ritual through which people become members of the Church. It involves the use of water as a symbol of the washing away of sin. 2.Give an example of a set prayer. The Lord’s Prayer 3.What does salvation by grace mean? Salvation is a gift for those who have faith in Jesus. 4.Give a Christian quote on forgiveness. ‘I tell you not 7 times but 70 times 7.’ OR ‘Let he who has never sinned throw the first stone.’ 5. 7 Archbishop Desmond Tutu Archbishop Desmond Tutu lived under the system of apartheid in South Africa… Apartheid Apartheid means ‘separateness’ White superiority and black inferiority. Black people were not allowed to vote. Black people had to live in separate areas. Black and white people were kept apart. E.g. Black and white people could not marry or use the same beaches. 90% of the land was owned by white people. The Dutch Reformed Church taught that God had created white people as the superior race.

8 Archbishop Desmond Tutu Archbishop Desmond Tutu peacefully campaigned for black people to be treated equally. 10 What Would Desmond Do (WWDD)? In Northern Ireland there has been great conflict between Protestant and Catholic Christians. There have been violent attacks carried out by both sides. Thousands of people have died in the period known as The Troubles. a)Say it’s not my problem b)Say may the best side win c)Encourage both sides to forgive and reconcile

11 What Would Desmond Do (WWDD)? You need to create your own conflict scenario to ask Desmond Tutu his advice. Write your scenario in pairs and think of possible options and outcomes. Be ready to ask Desmond at the end of the lesson!
