Homeroom Warm Up 11-17-2014 Today is “National Take a Hike Day.” If you could plan a hike for your family or classmates, where would you take them?

A cademic Enrichment Warm Up 11-17-14 Weathering is a major factor in soil formation because it _______________. A.binds soil particles B. adds humus which enriches the soil C. mixes the components of soil together D. breaks down rocks into fine soil particles

Academic Enrichment Closure Which of these processes occurs where continental plates drift toward oceanic plates? A. oceanic plate sedimentation B. oceanic plate subduction C. continental plate divergence D. continental plate collision

SCIENCE WARM UP 11-17-14 Where does weathering occur in the rock cycle? A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4

Homework Due Tuesday Page 481 # 1-8

GLE GLE 0707.7.5 Differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable resources in terms of their use by man. GLE 0707.7.6 Evaluate how human activities affect the earth’s land, oceans, and atmosphere.

HMMMM.... What do you think a natural resource is?

Natural Resource Any natural material that is used by humans Examples are water, petroleum, minerals, forests and animals

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?

HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

SOLAR Energy from the sun. Why is energy from the sun renewable?

GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat. Why is energy from the heat of the Earth renewable?

WIND Energy from the wind. Why is energy from the wind renewable?

BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. Why is energy from biomass renewable?

WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Why is energy of flowing water renewable?

How can we help save our natural resources? HMMMM…….

Conservation Taking care of our natural resources

A NEED TO RECYCLE, REDUSE, AND REUSE

A NEED TO RECYCLE WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO RECYCLE? WHY SHOULD WE REUSE ITEMS? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO REDUCE? WHY SHOULD WE RECYCLE? HOW CAN WE HELP?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO RECYCLE? RECYCLING MEANS TO USE MATERIALS AGAIN TO MAKE SOMETHING NEW!

WHY SHOULD WE REUSE ITEMS? PRODUCTS THAT STAY USEFUL REDUCE THE DEMAND FOR NEW PRODUCTS REUSING ITEMS ALSO EXTEND THE PRODUCTS NEED TO BE RECYCLED OR THROWED AWAY

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO REDUCE? REDUCTION MEANS TO MAKE SOMETHING SMALLER USE SOMETHING LESS OFTEN

Where does it go? Much of our garbage ends up in landfills. Sometimes the garbage is taken to an Incinerator where it is burned.

HOW CAN WE HELP? We can help by learning more about and Practicing the three “R”s of management: Reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Summary What are the main differences between renewable and renewable resources?

Science Closure Question Which of the following resources is a renewable resource? a.Coal b.Trees c.Oil d.Natural gas

Academic Enrichment Closure Which of the following comes from a nonrenewable natural resource? a.Solar energy b.Fossil fuel energy c.Geothermal energy d.Hydroelectric energy
