Unit 1 The Sacramental Nature of the Church

A fuller definition of “Sacrament” Jesus himself is a Sacrament Strengthen and deepen our relationship with God and each other The Church as Body of Christ & the Sacrament of Christ Efficacious signs of grace Instituted by Christ Entrusted to the Church Divine life is dispensed to us Visible rites by which the Sacraments are celebrated They bear fruit in those who receive them (CCC1131)

Efficacious Signs of Grace St. Thomas Aquinas sacraments “have efficacy from the incarnate Word himself” Sacraments effect what they symbolize and symbolize what they effect Each Sacrament confers a grace that is proper to it Grace CCC1997 A participation in the life of God CCC1996 Free and undeserved help that God gives us So that we can respond to God’s call NOT something that is outside of the relationship we have with God A Gift! That helps us participate in a relationship with God and one another!

Instituted by Christ Rooted in Jesus and traceable to him St. Leo the Great “What was visible in our Savior has passed over to is mysteries.” Commemorations of the Paschal Mystery All of the Sacraments celebrate the Paschal Mystery B/C of the power of the HS the Paschal Mystery can be made present for us today in the Sacraments In each Sacrament the saving actions of Christ are made present. Sacramental Economy “management of the household” The way Christ cares for his household, the Church

Sacraments are the Masterworks of God! (CCC1116) God comes to us in the Sacraments because he chooses to do so! Sacraments are actions of the HS at work in the Church In the Sacraments – God acts first and then we act in response ACTION IS A KEY ELEMENT! Every Sacrament is an encounter (a dialogue) with God RELATIONSHIP IS A KEY ELEMENT!

“A visible sign that points to and makes real God’s presence; God invites us to enter into communion with him and with all those who are celebrating with us.” Each Sacrament fills us with GRACE and transforms us! Makes us completely WHOLE & HOLY We grow in God’s likeness through our participation in the Sacraments!

Church-approved ritual involving objects, words, and actions. A real encounter of oneness between God and humanity, and oneness between Church members. Empowerment to become more holy and to minister to others through the gift of God’s grace! Remembering that God is present now and always!

Each Sacrament, in its entirety, is a memorial, celebration, a communion, and a transformation!
