1Samuel 24:1-15 (NIV) 1. After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.” 2. So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. 3. He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4. The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 2 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%2024&version=NIV

1Samuel 24:1-15 (cont.) 5. Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7. With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%2024&version=NIV

1Samuel 24:1-15 (cont.) 8. Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 9. He said to Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’? 10. This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11. See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 4 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%20245&version=NIV

1Samuel 24:1-15 (cont.) 12. May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13. As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you. 14. “Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? 15. May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.” http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%2024&version=NIV

Jealous Pursuit 1 After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.” 2 So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. 8

Saul: First King of Israel Israel had asked for a king, "like other nations". (1 Sam. 8:4-5) God showed Samuel to anoint Saul as king. (1 Sam. 9:15-17) Saul: tall and attractive. (1 Sam. 10:22) Saul was initially reluctant (1 Sam. 10:22-23) 9

Impact Upon Saul Saul: anxiety about his leadership Worried about what people think (1 Sam 15:24) Usurps Samuel’s role (1 Sam 13: 7-14) Disobedient to instructions from Samuel (1 Sam 15) 10

Saul and David David slays Goliath David’s reputation as a warrior grows in fight vs. Philistines People sing David’s praises Saul becomes jealous 11

Impact Upon Saul For Saul: Pursuit of David became an obsession. Devoted significant resources to this effort. 12

Back at the Cave… Saul enters the cave alone David and his men are hiding “Cover his knees” vs. take a nap Saul is vulnerable

David's Men: Natural response (flesh) Kill him now Be done with this unnecessary chase. Their lives were at risk, too. Haven't you been anointed as next king? You will be the next king anyway... They said: “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’” 14

David's Response David approached Saul David slices a piece of King's robe... David's conscience bothers him God's direction vs. our "good ideas" 15

David's Response To kill Saul would be wrong He is still “God's anointed” Recognizes God's authority in Saul Spirit: light & wisdom Told his men: stand down 16

David Confronts Saul David emerges from cave as Saul rejoins his men. Bows in respect Honor the authority of king Target blame at advice of others Piece of robe presented as evidence that David poses no threat, no intention of rebellion Appeal to God to judge between them 17

Saul and David SAUL Paranoid, self-absorbed Jealous of David Walk in darkness (pursue David) Afraid of men Make poor choices DAVID Has a relationship with God Walks in light Unjustly pursued, maintains respect for God’s annointed Refused advice of men – had insight his men did not Still- impulsive – act rashly. Conscience - alarm 18

SELF Flesh - Autonomy Darkness Jealousy, fear, greed Conflict It's all about me (pride) Seared conscience 19 Spirit - God & His kingdom Light /illumination Compassion, mercy, honor & respect Peace I am a servant (humility) Tender conscience
