Skeletal System 1 of 28 GCSE PE: Theory Unit 8 Lesson 1

The Skeletal System Please copy down the date, title and learning outcome and complete the starter Learning Objectives: Focusing on exercise and the skeletal system Learning Outcome: A/B I can name and define the functions of the Skeletal System. B/CI can name and give a definition of the functions of the skeletal system. C/DI can name the three functions of the Skeletal System. Starter: What do you feel the Skeletal System does for you? Think of as many answers down as possible.

The Functions of the Skeleton Movement Support Protection

Movement 1)The bones provide a place for the muscles to attach to, so that when the muscles contract they pull the bones to cause movement. Movements occur at the joints of the skeleton. 2)Bones also act as levers. Levers allow the body to increase the force they generate or increase the speed of movement. This is very helpful in physical activity. E.g. a tennis player with longer levers will generate more force on a serve.

Support The Skeleton provides a frame for your body and therefore supports the body in a variety of positions….. Standing Sitting Laying down Tom Daly (Olympic diver) performing a Handstand before diving.

Protection Your skeleton provides protection for your vital organs… The Cranium protects the brain. Spine protects your spinal chord Ribs protect your heart and lungs Tom Daly (Olympic Diver) places hands into the water first to push the water down which allows the Cranium to have less of an impact on entry. Cranium protects his brain, ribs from his heart and Lungs. Tom Daly

Can you explain where these athletes use Movement, Support, and Protection. Beth Tweddle Chris Ashton

The Skeletal System Please copy down the date, title and learning outcome and complete the starter Learning Objectives: Focusing on exercise and the skeletal system Learning Outcome: A/B I can name and define the functions of the Skeletal System. I use examples in my answers. B/CI can name and give a definition of the functions of the skeletal system. C/DI can name the three functions of the Skeletal System.
