Ms. Kelly 7 th Grade Health

Primary Function To supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. (This is done through breathing.)

Breathing In and Out Inspiration: “Breathing in” or inhaling Expiration: “Breathing out” or exhaling Oxygen: what we breathe in during inspiration All of the cells in our body need this to live It is the fuel that makes all body processes run Carbon dioxide: what we breathe out during expiration The waste product in our bodies

Parts of the Body Involved Nose Throat Voice box Windpipe Lungs

Nose Organ used during inhalation and exhalation Cilia helps trap and filter out dust and other particles that enter during inspiration

Mouth With nose, warms and humidifies air entering the lungs through inspiration.

Pharynx AKA “The Throat “ Carries both food and air

Esophagus Passageway for food

Epiglottis A small flap of tissue that covers the air passage when we swallow Keeps food and liquid from going into lungs

Larynx AKA “The Voice Box” Uppermost part of the air-only passage Contains vocal cords, which vibrate to produce sound

Trachea AKA “The Windpipe” Extends downward from base of larynx Held open by “C” rings of cartilage for easy air-flow

Bronchi Branches off of the trachea into the lungs

Bronchioles Smaller branches off of the bronchi Contain alveoli (air sacs)

Alveoli Where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide actually takes place Each lung houses about 300 to 400 million alveoli!!

Diaphragm Muscle that separates chest from abdomen Helps regulate breathing by moving up and down

When we breathe IN Diaphragm moves downward toward the abdomen Rib muscles pull the ribs upward and outward, enlarging the chest cavity and pulling air in through the nose or mouth

When we breathe OUT Diaphragm moves upward Chest cavity to get smaller and pushes the gases in the lungs up and out of the nose and mouth.

Ribs Protect the lungs and much of the respiratory tract

Pathway of Oxygen

nose mouth larynx pharynx lung trachea R. bronchus L. bronchus bronchiole alveoli diaphragm
