7 Bizonia and Trizonia The US and British zones in Germany were run so closely together that they became one unit, Bizonia It had good relations with the French zone In 1948 the Western allies started to make the 3 zones a democratic, capitalist state, increasing tension with the USSR, especially as Stalin was not consulted about the changes

8 The Berlin Crisis : June 1948 – May 1949 1948 : 3 western controlled zones of Germany united; grew in prosperity due to the Marshall Plan West wanted East to rejoin; Stalin feared it would hurt Soviet security In May 1948 the new currency introduced into the 3 western zones of Germany provoked the Soviet blockade of Berlin and the Berlin airlift June 1948: Stalin decided to gain control of West Berlin, which was deep inside the Eastern Sector – Cuts road, rail and canal links with West Berlin, hoping to starve it into submission West responds by airlifting supplies to allow West Berlin to survive

9 Use your notes, Walsh and the paper text to answer the questions below and on the 3 page (228) of the paper text 1.Why did Stalin decide to blockade West Berlin? 2.A) What options were open to the western allies to break the blockade? 2.B) Why did they choose an airlift? 3.‘Operation Little Vittles shows that the Americans were operating in the interests of the people of West Berlin and the Soviets were not.’ Do you agree? 4.What were the consequences of the Berlin blockade? (Pg 84 Walsh)
