[Let’s think about some Essential Questions?] What is electricity? What are some ways we use electricity in our daily lives? Give examples.

Students will be able to… Identify the basic forms of energy (light, sound, heat, electrical, and magnetic). Recognize that energy is the ability to cause motion or create change. (Let them know there are 5 types of energy, we are focusing on…) Give examples of how energy can be transferred from one form to another. Recognize that electricity in circuits requires a complete loop through which an electrical current can pass, and that electricity can produce light, heat, and sound. Identify and classify objects and materials that conduct electricity and objects and materials that are insulators of electricity. Explain how electromagnets can be made, and give examples of how they can be used. Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others..

 Energy – light, sound, heat, electrical, magnetic  Conductors - materials that allow electricity to flow easily  Insulators – materials that DO NOT allow electricity to flow easily spoon (metal) eraser (rubber)

 Think, Pair, Share… 1. Think about each picture. 2. Pair with the person next to you and figure out if the object is a conductor or an insulator and why. 3. Share results with the whole class.

 Closed/complete circuit- a complete loop or path that electricity or electrical current can flow  Open/incomplete circuit- an incomplete loop or path in which there is no flow of electrical current  Parallel circuit- more than one pathway for electrical current to flow  Series circuit- one pathway for electrical current to flow

 List the materials used to make this closed/complete circuit.  How do you know this is a complete circuit? Explain your thinking.

 Using the same materials as a closed/ complete circuit…battery, wires, light bulb, explain why this is an open/ incomplete circuit.  List other ways that a circuit may be open/ incomplete.

 What do you notice about the SERIES and the PARALLEL circuits?  How are they alike? How are they different? Explain your thinking.

 Incandescent- most commonly used light bulb today. These bulbs are less energy efficient.

 Halogen bulbs -produce a white, bright light. They are small in size, but provide longer life.

 Fluorescent- use less electricity and last 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

 LED (Light Emitting Diodes)- this types of lighting is more efficient and longer lasting.

 Always look for this symbol!

 A soft metal core made into a magnet by the passage of electric current through a coil surrounding it.  Uses for electromagnets 1. Various every day electronics 2. Electric motor and generators 3. Control switches in relay like when making a telephone call. 4. As a crane in a junkyard, the round plate is an electromagnet.

________________________________ ELECTRIC COMPANY  Your company (COME UP WITH YOUR OWN NAME) is writing a proposal to the Webster School Committee for wiring lights in a classroom at the new Park Ave. Elementary School. The size of the classroom is 12x4 or 48 square feet.  Your group will begin by researching a specific type of bulb and three facts that would support why that type of bulb would be the most beneficial for a classroom. (Websites and informational texts are provided by the teacher).  Your group will also research the best type of circuit to wire that classroom and three facts that would support why that type of circuit would be most beneficial for a classroom.  Your group will set up your note taking using two-column notes (see class notes on vocabulary for reference). Two-column notes are due on Day 5 for a check-in.  Once the two- column notes are complete, you will follow my top-down web model which will help you with your letter writing proposal. The top-down web is due on Day 7.  After the top-down web is complete, you will begin your letter to the School Committee. Please follow the writing template provided which includes all the parts of a letter, and specific informational text features to include. The Letter is due on Day 10.
