Topic: The Rock Cycle PSSA: 3.5.7.A/S8.D.1.1

Objective: TLW describe the processes involved in the rock cycle. TLW compare weathering, erosion, and deposition. TLW classify rocks based on composition and texture.

MI #1: Processes that shape Earth Weathering is the process by which rock material is broken into smaller pieces. Erosion is the process by which weathered rock is transported from one place to another. Deposition is the process by which eroded rock is laid down (or deposited) in a new location.

MI #1: Processes that shape Earth (Part 2) Heat can cause rock to melt or change chemically to form new types of rocks. Pressure can cause sediments to compact and cement together to form new rock material.

MI #3: Classifying Rocks Rocks are classified based on their composition and their texture. Composition is the chemical makeup of a rock. Texture is the quality of a rock based on the sizes, shapes, and position of the rock’s grains (or particles)

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding the rock cycle allows us to understand the different ways rocks can form and how the Earth can change over time.
