Paris, France = the center of the Enlightenment New Ideas Challenge Society: Small pamphlets were printed and distributed, spreading ideas…more people called for reform Middle Ages = acceptance of divine right rule, class-system and heavenly reward Enlightenment Ideas Based on Reason = made these ideas seem irrational Enlightenment Thinkers = just societies ensure social justice & happiness

Government/Church = defended “old order” Censorship = “counterattack” to Enlightenment ideas Banned books, imprisoned writers Montesquieu & Voltaire: disguised ideas with fiction (used symbolism) i.e. “Candide”

Louis XIV: the baroque period Greek/Roman Tradition Glorified battles and/or lives of saints Colorful, large, exciting Louis XV: much less formal…reflected in rococo style Lighter, elegant, charming Often used rural settings and animals

6 Enlightened Despots (Using the power “for good”?)
Fredrick the Great of Prussia: likes Voltaire, works to reform efficiency, trys to tone down on torture, more free press. Catherine the Great of Russia: liked philisophe ideas, but still liked power. Joseph II of Austria: travels in disguise to learn about his subjects. Implements new ideas. Abolishes serfdom.
