2 Enlightenment Influence As the Enlightenment ideas spread throughout Europe they began to influence society through music, art, and writing. Change was occurring as a result. The Church and Royals rejected many of these ideas.

3 Enlightenment and Monarchy -Many philosophers, particularly Voltaire thought that the best government was a fair Monarchy

4 -Some rulers adopted Enlightenment policies themselves. -They were called Enlightened Despots

5 -The Enlightened Despots supported the ideas but had no intention of giving up power

6 Frederick the Great -Frederick II King of Prussia from 1740-1786 called himself a “Servant of the State”: ●granted religious freedoms ●abolished torture ●lightened censorship

7 Joseph II of Austria -Legal reforms and freedom of the press -abolished serfdom

8 Catherine the Great -Ruled Russia from 1762- 1796 ●exchanged letters with Voltaire ●really well educated ●Her ideas about tolerance changed when she had the Russian Army crush a serf uprising brutally
